Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Purchased a 65 chevrolet impala the other day.  I came out of the house and it was idling a bit hight and smoke came out of the dashboard at which point the car stopped.  I cannot turn the car over now.  I cannot see any power getting to the car. windshield wipers lights etc..  Where do I start.  Should I check the fuses.  Where would I start even to get the car turned on to get the top up as im worries about the rain.  Any help is appreciated before I get it towed to a shop.

There is a fuse link on the positive battery wire that will give up the ghost before it all sets on fire. Look at this fuseable link, and replace the red wire.

Had this happen to mine in97, get a painless wiring kit fixing the fuseable link w/o repairing damage will burn wirng further. You can fix it one wire at a time........... long tedious and never fun. Painless has a plug and play harness for your ride all labeled and maked. Connect, ground done
