Why won't my monte run right

I bought a 1971  chevy Monte Carlo  it ran
good I drove it home and a couple days later
I was driving  to the store.. and it started
sputtering  and back firing and I had to use
my jump pack to start it ...because  it's
completely draining the battery.. and I put in
a different battery  and clean the cables and  
replaced the ulternater  with a brand new
one and the battery still draining  the battery  
..i also replaced the spark plugs and wires
..please any information would help

Sounds like the carburetor needs to be looked at, may be flooding out. If you can get it started, try tapping on the carburetor and working the throttle revving the engine up. If there is a piece of dirt in the needle valve, this may work it threw. Otherwise it would have to be rebuilt. Also a bad fuel pump can cause this, fuel pressure would need to be verified.
