Why does my 98 Monte Carlo start to run warm when it is idiling?

Asked by Peoria_MacMe Aug 08, 2013 at 05:26 AM about the 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34 FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have noticed that when my car is running but not moving, such as when I am sitting at
the drive through, it starts to run hot.  The temp. gage goes up considerably, and I can
actually smell the engine getting hotter.  However, when the car is moving down the
road- either highway or city- it is fine.  Even after it has been sitting and idiling, and I start
driving again, e temperature goes back to 'normal'.

Check the fan operation, use a water hose to remove several years of bug collection in the radiator fins, make sure there are no obstructions of air flow to the radiator, and is the fluid level where it should be? If all these things are good, the next place to look will be the thermostat. Quick cheap and easy replacement.
