88 s10 rough idle, no power, cuts out when driving
Asked by catalinacrasher Feb 10, 2016 at 08:43 PM about the 1988 Chevrolet S-10
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 88 s10 base model 2.5 started running
rough when my o2 sensor blew out of the
exhaust manifold (faulty welds) i replaced
the manifold and the o2 sensor, still
rough....and has gotten to the point that i
have to keep pumping the pedal to keep it
running, so far ive replaced, fuel injector,
map sensor, throttle position sensot, idle
air control valve, spark plugs, plug wires,
dist cap and rotor, ignition control module,
pickup coil, hall effect switch, ignition coil,
air charge temp sensor, coolant temp
sensor, oil pressure switch, fuel pump
relay, adjusted valves, i did set the timing
to 8 degrees after i put the distributor
back in, (which was before the problem im
having now) i checked all my grounds,
and even ran a few extra, the ecm ground
is direct to the neg battery post, the egr
valve is deleted with a plate, and ALL
vacuum lines replaced, ..... anyhow the
truck will start right up every time easily,
runs smoothly when its about 70 outside
but when colder it misfires, exhaust smells
rich, will rev up high and then low, untill it
revs low enough to kill it, while
accelerating it will lose ALL power
intermittantly, it isnt missing on just 1
cylinder, its missing them all, when i
accelerate with my foot to the floor, it will
catch itself and seem to have full power,
any advice, ideas, knowledge, or anything
would be appreciated

Today i noticed that if i unplug the wires to.the voltage regulator in the alternator then the engine levels out, all power restored runs smooth, i replaced the alternator, and still cuts out when hooked up, but runs perfect when unhooked, still completely.confused on the situation, also if i leave the alternator hooked up and disconnect the battery it will also run perfectly

Hey buddy, i'm having the same problem, i've done everything you did, i just happen to see this forum, did u ever figure out anything?
my s10 was doing the same thing,,,,eng light will come on run rough,,and I did evey thing u did.. but in my case,, my Map ,,my O2,, and just so u know auto zone has a falt reader that will work in you truck.. but in my case I finaly found the problem..a bad connection to the mapp sencer and a vac line smashed under my air cleaner,, but it took me awhile to figure it out,,, the person with the Alt p[roblem youve got a wire grounding out,, or your ignition switch is bad
I have the same problem with my 89 Trooper (2.8 GM engine). It will start and idle fine for about 2 - 3 minutes and then rev up and down. Vacuum lines and EGR are okay, but it will dismay upon acceleration on the road... when it drops the revs I can hear the TBI sucking in air... any thoughts?
I have recently dealt with this problem, i learned a lesson on this problem. There are two voltage regulators on you car\truck, your alternator is one @ i did the same things you guys do and was furipus over this, til an old man educated me on this problem, the second voltage regulator is a little computer box located typocally under the carpet where your feet go, which side will vary, just look,it is actually ur primary voltage regulator. All of my light would dim then get bright in sequence with my idle pinging up@down. Find it , go to junk yard, match up the model and replace. Hope this helps you with ur frustration

pLUGGED CATALYST its why the o2s blew out . Pound on it when its cold and you will hear it rattle. Put a vacuum gauge on the thing and go drive it and watch it drop when the engine chokes out
I went through all that with my 92 s10 2.8 then i started tapping on every thing with a wrench and when I hit the electronic vac regulator valve it started idling smooth, it stopped lurching after months of removing and replacing parts. It was stuck. So I will order one tomorrow.
