choke is not working properly it being a 1977 might wanna look into a manual choke. cheap and easy fix. hope this helps.

could this cause backfiring too while running? or would that just be a timing issue? the truck sat for years before i bought it

yes when cold and if it runs good after its warms up the timing is probably fine. a tune up probably wouldn't hurt if it sat that long. plugs, cap, rotor, wires and try lucas gas treatment seems to work well for fords. I wouldn't personally touch the timing if it runs good after its warm. hope this helps

Hi I have a question when u say is stalls when you don't let it warm up enough ... Can you turn it back right up or it won't start ? I have same issue where I didn't warm it up enough and it stalled and wasn't able to turn bak on.. Do I have to change also the part picture on top?? Let me know thanks.

yes....when it warms up the choke is not needed...thinking sluggish/sludged and crispy valve train...I'd run some thinner oil perhaps a pint of kerosene for a little while to loosen up any organic materials...and/or rust and make it "transportable" by the oil stream...to end up in the filter...if it isn't choked off what's it a PH-1A...the most common filter...buy a couple until this clears up~

Where is this thermal choke spring part located ... And can I buy this at oreillys ?? Is it on the carburetor If so how is it changed??

you should take a good look at the assembly...then take the broken pieces to the autoparts store...there ain't a lot there....examine the butterfly...that's easy enough....look at what causes that one to shut....that's the goodie we want~

THANK YOU ... Have noticed that part where u accelerate from carb sometimes moves from it's position ... I'll chk it out - so once I fix this it should turn on ?

1 people found this helpful.

No...tell me not "moves about" means there are loose mounting bolts....this can happen due to a decomposed gasket....snug down the four bolts that hold the carburetor on....if this is what is happening...like Fabs says~

maybe time for a carb. rebuild... sounds like the float bowl maybe goes empty's after sitting. but might wanna ask the guru gods/kings.. good luck

Judge Roy I checked my carburetor and the butterfly is open on one side the right side is up is this normal or does it need to be closed on both sides. Or is this Normal with the butterfly-?

175

Oh another thing I noticed .. What would cause all my oil to leak... I chkd my dipstick and clean no oil. My tow man sd that he saw puddle of oil after my truck stalled. My mechanic changed camshaft, oil pump, oil pan gasket, timing cover gasket, valve cover gasket and distributor gears... Why did I loose all my oil? Did the mechanic not install something properly??? Would that be the case. Mechanic sd that I needed all this so my truck won't stall but it happen again the next day it stalled... And by reading this it sounds like all I needed was to wrk on carburetor.

...all them things that you replaced...have no way of knowing if you really needed that work.....but sending you back on the street with an oil leak is a no-no....like a person with the tonsillectomy should not be sent out without enough stitches to stop the bleeding....and bleeds until brain-dead....the car service is like that as the oil is the blood of your system....at the shop...we'd take a can of "foamy engine brite" wash the engine at the coin-op self service car wash...let 'er dry and then are able to pinpoint the leak...if you've got a plugged Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve, the oil crankcase pressure has no where to go and will cause valve cover gasket leaks~ so, I'd start there replace the PCV valve (like four bucks) then note any dripping~

thermal springs are an expected wear/replacement item...should be reasonably priced...not as familiar with fords but GM's have a sheetmetal shield around them and just the link stickin' out the top...look at the operation of this bi-metallic spring~

6,685

Does a carb with a manual choke even need or have a thermal spring???? Judge?????

1 people found this helpful.

okay...your bi-metallic spring is called a thermostat and is in a tidy little package~ https://www.google.com/#q=1977+ford+f+150+carburetor+choke+spring&tb m=shop&spd=1072278963612725200

tutttttttttle, I'm friggin' outta here, man...it's because that some people think that one question mark is not sufficient....why???? the remaining question marks subvert the previous one until your head spins. There was no assurances that a manual choke retrofit was done here...good day sir...see you never...with any luck.~!

certainly you can explain the "split butterfly" which sounds like it's a fairy tale...share your knowledge about these about these carburetors~

6,685

read! said they had a manual choke from seeing the pic. you put up. So why confuse them with a thermo spring???? lol no need to confuse anyone and make them chase there tails... and yes I could explain to them but what would be the purpose??? more time we wont get back from reading your babbling and stupid quotes !!! just stop! lmao

175

I examined the carburetor the inside area of the butterfly ..what part makes the butterfly move? the butterfly is the middle area from the first pic right? is not broken.. its just up on the right side.. im asking if this is normal.. once the carburetor turns on does the butterfly move up and down.. or does it remain open on one side... Judge can you tell me the specific parts that I needed to get for carbuetor.. ?(I need a thermostat and I need the whole part on top or just the spring...? ) ***when ever I want to turn on my truck it wont start theres just fart noises and a little smoke coming from carburetor.

175

which one is the butterfly ? is it the throttle valve or choke valve. Also is this why my truck turned off > "At idle, the throttle valve is fully shut, but there is an idling jet that bypasses the throttle valve and sends a set amount of fuel and air into the engine. Without an idling jet, the engine would shut off if the throttle were not activated by the driver during idle.<

175

jimtuttle mentioned that my float chamber may be going empty when sitting .. what would I need to change for this.. whats the part name? "There is a small hole in the narrowing called a jet which is fed fuel via the float chamber. The float chamber is a container filled with an amount of fuel that is set by a float. The vacuum created in the venturi draws in fuel from the float chamber, which is at ambient pressure. The faster the filtered air comes in through the carburetor throat, the lower the pressure in the venturi. This leads to a higher pressure difference between the venturi and the float chamber, and thus more fuel flows out of the jet and mixes with the airstream."

the 2 smaller barrels in front have the butter fly the 2 back barrels only open at full throttle.... when you first start a cold car it should be mostly shut to give it more fuel as the car warms up the thermo spring heats up and slowly opens the butterfly until it is fully open... a manual choke has to be manually open as the motor gets warm. so if its shut after a warm up that is a problem it needs to be open. hope this helps... that's the basics

6,685

thanks judge for the confusion....no. carb needs looking at...sounds like a rebuild is needed on the carb. need to see if the butterfly is closed on a cold start and see if it open as it gets warm.. then go from there..

175

The butterfly is open when I checked it the car is not on... don't want to start. How much does it cost to rebuild ? Or is it something I can do my self ?

6,685

ok im pretty sure it stays open until you press the gas 1 time and it should close, try that first. also that is a 1 barrel carb I assume this is a 6cyl.? from the pics it looks pretty good.. on the second pic. is where you adjust the choke if the thermo spring is working. you don't have a manual choke its electric. on the 2nd pic you have the 3 flat head screws.... that should adjust your choke by loosening the 3 screws and turning it until the butterfly is closed on a cold start. let me know hope this helps

6,685

not sure if it needs a rebuild if so I would have it done by a pro...

175

Ok I loosened the 3 bolts and moving the black thermo spring around but it won't cause the butterfly to close or move. I took all 3 bolts out took it out and noticed that there is a little clamp connected to the butterfly I can move little clamp and that's the only way it moved- but it don't close butterfly it only moves it up and Down. ? Do I replace this thermal spring?

175

Also remember jjmtuttle that I'm doing this as my truck is not tunred on ... Have not been able to start it since it was stalled.

make sure its getting gas and spark before you go any further with the carb... I thought it was running but just poor on the start ups....

175

Hve new spark plugs and new distributor and also the mechanic sd that it was the camshaft because I had the same troubles where it would just turn off while running and made those farts sounds.

6,685

if your not getting spark then check the timing.. need to get gas, spark and in time to run... ps even out of time it will spark.. check that first

175

that was the problem i had with distrubutor...mechanic sd he fixed it and again same issues as before .. car stopped after running a few mins... i thought it was because i did not let it warm enough so turned off again.. thats why i thought it may be carburetor ...

1 people found this helpful.
6,685

So you are not getting spark? is there a ignition box on the fire wall?

175

where is that ? see it sounds like it wants to turn on but id doesnt ? when i turn key switch theres some sounds coming from the carb and the farting sounds from the muffler ....

6,685

sounds out of time... check and see if your distributor is loose if not you might have a timing issue....

175

Timing that's what the mechanic fixed... Why is it messing up ... I had the timing fixed twice and it keeps turning off ... ? Why is that ? I got new ditributor and same thing happen.

175

Ok will chk that out. Would I have to possibly get a new fuel pump?

175

Ok I'll chk that out thanks so much for the help it's just that this truck is really errr getting me to the point of Sale ? Do you know what would be a fair sale price .. Body is great little dents here and there ... Motor is great too.. It's just the issue that I keep having ... Stalling after timing and other things get fixed .

175

Yes I'll post some .. I've been told is a great looking truck fr 77-
