My 1979 ford 460 moter .statrer was grinding bad checked it conveter to flywheel 3 nuts were missing i replaced them now starter gear noteven touching flywheel but i can hear it kicking in & out .what

Why where the torque converter bolts/ nuts missing? So how about the flex plate? Was that bolted on? Putting on the torque converter nuts pull the flex plate away from alignment?
