how can i get a mustang sound out of my F150's 302?
just built a 302 from scratch with edelbrock intake manifold and holley 750 four barrell carb. thinking to go with heddman
headers, but i would like to duplicate the mustang sound. the only thing i ever heard that sounded like a mustang was another
mustang. is there a certain header exhaust combo i would need?

Any brand long tube headers, an x pipe, and series 40 flowmasters is the key to sounding like a mustang. I would cut down the carb though. Way to much CFM for a 302. Sould look at a 600-650 holly. You will get more power that way.

I just dressed out my F-150 302 with headers, 2 1/4" stainless pipes and Thrush stainless glass packs. Man does it sound sweet. It has a deep rich tone. It had Flowmasters on it before and I was not happy with them. Sounded too stock. I'm not sure what the Mustang sounds like, but I have always been a lover of Thrush glass packs. I think you will too.
longtubes, x-pipe, flowmaster catback is what youre looking for. patrick is right on the size of your carb as well. youre probably losing low end torque. a 650 would be a better fit.
thanx for the feedback guys. got the 750 for free so it'll have to do til i can scrape a little more dead presidents together. it's an expensive hobby we chose. again, i appreciate y'all.
I think the best "bang for your buck" answer to this question is to add an h-pipe. All of those other exhaust parts will continue to improve the sound, certainly. But to transform the truck sound to a mustang growl, go with an h-pipe.
