Hang on here. What engine? What mileage? Short answer is ANY AOD up until 91 will fit. There are, though, different versions, all in the same case. Number one thing is to plan on a good rebuild unless you come across a known good one that has been maintained. As for them not lasting, my brother had one that was PERFECT up until about 550,000 miles. It was just starting to slip. It came out to be rebuilt when car number 2 died. He also had one in an 86 Grand Marquis wagon that was PERFECT at 500,000 miles. I know of another that is coming up on 1,000,000 miles, and all of these with nothing but maintenance. So much for delicate. The thing that kills them most is the kick down cable. They stretch and that causes the clutches to wear. Keep that cable under the right tension, and you are good to go. Look for the AOD out of an F 150 or F250, preferably the latter. Either that or a Grand Marquis/Crown Victoria/Lincoln Town Car from 85 through 91. IF you get extremely lucking and find a tow package donor vehicle, grab that transmission. It has heavy duty clutches, and a shift kit from the factory, and these up grades were never advertised anywhere. Drive a tow package equipped car, though, and you will feel the difference. Put in the heaviest transmission cooler you can find, too. In the interest of lightness, too many vehicles have small, inadequate radiators, and so transmissions run hot, which kills them. You CAN go with a C-4 or C-6, depending on the engine, but why? The C-4 is not as strong as the V-8 AOD, and no over drive. The C-6 is strong, yes, but it is also power hungry, and no over drive and costs just as much to rebuild as the AOD. Go AOD, maintain it properly, and you will have hundreds of thousands of miles out of it.
