The 5.8L (and 7.5L in the F250) V-8 didn't get fuel injection until '88 however if you have the 5.0L (or a 4.9L but that’s an I-6) I think it will be FI, look at the VIN, The 8th digit is the Engine Code (Y=4.9L I6 EFI, N=5.0L V8 EFI, H=5.8L V8 Carb) Note: These changed in 88. If it is the original engine this should tell which engine you have, you could also run it through a VIN decoder, that will tell you almost anything you need to know about it. I use http://www.ford-trucks.com/vin-decoder/index.php it's not the best but you can give it a try assuming it has the original engine if it doesn’t you would have to look at the engine itself. I have to disagree, about 85% of '87 F150's have the 302(5.0L) not the 351(5.8L).

Well I am 45 and every f-150 or f-250 that I drove and owned carried a 351

or most likely a straight 6, 300 cubic inch fuel injected

I doubt a f150 would have a straight 6

i owned a f150 a 87 an it had a 302 in it an a 95 both had the same engine

Just out of curiosity why? The 300ci(4.9L) I-6 is one of the best pickup truck engines ever made, lots of low end torque and super reliable/durable Its not uncommon to see a straight 6 F-1/250 with well over 300,000 mi.

its either a 302, 351, or a 460. can you get picture of it under the hood?

my inline 6 has over 330 thousand km and still runs strong

The 5.0L v-8 was the only fuel injected engine you could get in an f150 in 87 but if the engine has been replaced it could be any of the engines because for 89 they had all of the engines fuel injected and the fuel injected engine would bolt right in with minimal changes

the 7.5 was not available in the half ton, no big block was ever available in any half ton from the big three, in stock, obviously excluding the rare performance versions. ie raptor, ss, viper, rumble bee etc

1987 F150 was either a 300 I6 Efi 302 Efi or 351 4bl (88+efi) THATS IT. You couldn't get a 460 in an F150 1987 was the 1st year for Efi in the 302 and In 88 the 351 and 460 got Efi NOT 89

Dustin. An '88 didn't come with a powerstroke. The powerstrke didn't come out till '94 1/2. '88 came with a 7.3 that doesn't make it a powerstroke. that was the first year for a 7.3. the 6.9 came in the year before that. I have had diesel fords I learn to drive.

whoops ur right i automaticly assumed it was a powerstroke because it was a ford and it was diesel.

I bet your truck has a 302 if its fuel injected and a v8 another way to tell is if your truck is a aod transmission or has overdrive it is a 302 its the only engine that came with that transmission fuel was first in the fseries in 1985 on the 302 the first diesel was in ford trucks in 1983 by navistar all the 351. V8's that are in 87 f150s are carburated the holley 4bbl. And on the aircleaner it says 5.8 4v ho a few 351,460 v8's I've seen in f250s are fuel injected but 90% of f150's hsd 302 v8's I have had four 87 f150's in my life and I still got the 87 with the 4bbl. Carburated engine runs forever early model efi ford are troublesome

I bought an brand new F-150 back in 1987. It was a 4.9 f.i. I-6 with a 4- speed manual and a short bed with dual tanks. It was a really weird spec that somebody ordered and I guess they didn't take it. That was the first brand new vehicle I ever purchased. I was 20 years old. I went in to buy a 4-cyl Ranger and they offered me that truck for roughly the same price as what I would have paid for the ranger. It was a great truck.

I meant to say that the engines offered at the time were the 4.9 F.I. , 302 F.I. & the 351 but I believe that was F.I. Also. I don't think ford offered a carbureted engine in California at that time. The 460 was not available in the F-150. One interesting note. My F.I. 6 could out sprint my dads '88 F-150 with the injected 302 to 60 MPH. My truck had a 4-speed with a compound 1st gear (which I never used) and dual fuel tanks. My dad's was a nicer XLT package with an automatic. I could pull him out of the hole and get to 60 before the 6 ran out of steam and the V8 caught me and walked away.

I have a 1988 F150. I know very little about. I do the 8th digit is an N it has the 302 matching codes. So its oe from the factory. I have had a problem with it consuming oil but showing no sign of using it, it doesn't burn it out the tail pipe, and doesn't leak from the motor anywhere. But consumes a ridiculous amount of oil. For instance I do an oil change driving about 60 miles round trip to work daily. In three days it consumes 3&1/2 qts of oil. Pulled off the throttle body and found lots of build up .. I assume there is something like a gasket causing this? So long story short ... was thinking of changing motors.. is this a good idea? Wanted a 351 windsor but not sure if it will fit in? Any comments or advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Glad I found this forum. Great engine, hell yeah. Put a battery and some gas. Started right up. 87 XLT lariat. It had been sitting for 9 years on the property we're at now. My mechanic buddy and i looked at it 28k miles showing. Didn't roll over. Tru milage. This sounds like the argument between my drunk friends in my garage. all of them are actually really good mechanics. I'll be touch soon with some questions.

Question. I have a 95 f150 XLT 5.0 2x4 buying a 89 Ford 150 5.0 v8 4x4 it should bolt in and wiring harness be they same just needing some feedback before I buy it

I know my answer is about 10 years too late, but I just joined the group and I have to reply because some of these answer are hilarious. I own a 87 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 with the 5.0 302 V/8 EFI. Its is stated by Ford Motor Company that electronic fuel injection came out in 85 but didn't actually reach the assembly line until 87. It also states that Ford only put the 5.0 Liter 302 and the 5.8 Liter 351 V/8 Windsor motors in the F-150 that year. Of course they put the 4.9 Liter V/6 in also but we're talking about V/8's. I came on here to try and figure out how to tell what tranny I might have AOD, AODE, C-6 or what? Could anyone help with this? Again mine is an 87 F-150 5.0 302 XLT 4x4 Automatic.

Ford didn't make a V6 F150 motor in 87 just to get the facts straight. It was a incredible inline 6. 300 c.i. Bullet proof. I do have a 87 F150 with first gen f.i. Pretty wimpy but runs well. I've heard they have problems but dont care. This one only has 93000 original miles so I will run it till it dies and start over. Fires up on the coldest of days without issue. Diesel's frequently but cant be fixed from what I'm getting. Any info on this would be helpful.
