1989 ford f-150 wont stay running?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is running and idling REALLY rough. Every time I start the engine,
it will turn over but then it reves into the high 2000's for RPS's and then
drops to nothing and dies. If I want to keep it running, then I have to give it
gas to imitate an idle. And I have to slip it into drive or reverse immidatly,
otherwise it will die. I just want to know how to start trouble shooting the
problem. Can anyone help me out?

Check fuel pressure. If fuel is ok, check crankshaft positioning and throttle positioning sensor. Other things that can cause that particular problem is evaporative solenoid stuck open

Check the hose going to the MAF adaptor for holes, oxygen sensors, Idle air control valve, take a can of starter fluid while it is running and spray around the throttle body, all hoses and vacuum lines. if it revs up, you found the vacuum leak.
