How to use 4x4

Asked by LDPerry Nov 10, 2008 at 11:47 AM about the 1987 Ford Ranger

Question type: General

I just acquired a '87 Ranger 4x4. It has 5speed manual, manual 2Hi, 4Hi and 4Low shift, manual locking hubs. What is correct procedure for shifting into the 4x positions and using the hubs. Can I drive it in 4Low range with hubs free?
Thanks

Good job asking if you dont know. Now first lock both hubs then for 4Hi you should be able to shift while driveing and if not put it in nuterl and put it in to 4Hi. Second no you can not drive in 4Lo with out being lock you should not drive in 4Lo unless your stuck becouse it run higher RPM on the motor and thaat is bad. I hope this helps

You do not need the hubs locked in to use 4-Lo, but there really is no need to do so unless you just like doing burnouts. You can run 4-Lo w/ the hubs locked in all you want for 4x4'ing, just remeber that you will not go as fast and that it puts alot more torque on your drivetrain. If you got the 3.73's like me it'll be about 45mph in 5th gear at about 3000-3300rpm.

Thanks Guys. I find that just using the 4Low even without the hubs locked is enough to crawl through some of the wet spots on my farm. I just wanted to be sure that I would not damage anything. The motor revs don't go high enough to worry since it's just crawling across a wet spot. It has the 2.9 L engine.

You can run in 4low with hubs out but I wouldn't do it for long periods of time. Also don't try to pull it into 4low when moving they will grind a little. You also shouldn't run with the hubs in for long periods of time unless the roads are slick or you are offroading.

when u in 4x4 ,high or low always lock in your hubs, the other posters wont have to pay your bill when u spin the spindles or hub assy,u can leave the hubs in lock position all the time, even in 2WD,wont hurt nothing.
