Anything can be done with enough money, but I would probably pass and just buy a diesel truck instead. You need more than just the engine, you need new fuel tank, pump, etc.

totally not worth it, you could probably find a 4 cyl diesel engine that would fit but it won't be cheap and you're looking at ridiculous fabrication to make it work, not to mention a computer to run the thing and a new custom harness plus the things the guy before me listed......sorry to say that it'd cost much more than what your truck is worth

well all the fabrication is free for me and i've already got a ford 3/4ton drivetrain waiting for me, so all the cost for me is the engine, ford makes a diesel fuel pump for the ford ranger that fits my stock tank.im just looking for information on engine possibilities. lol plus i love doing stuff like this. and most 4 cylinder diesels are all mechanically injected so there is very little wireing to be done.

i have no idea the cost and the guy is a great fabricator, but he used i think it was a bmw diesel that was used in lincoln mark VII's circa 1990. his project was actually a bronco II not that it makes a difference, and i believe he used the bronco auto tranny. i wish i had more info for you but i don't.

in the mid 80's the ranger actually came out with a turbo diesel that was from mercedes. Maybe if you check the wrecking yards enough you'll be able to find one. I amlost bought a 2wd one for 500 bucks a year ago but passed because the body was rotten. Now i'm kicking myself. The guy that bought it is getting 55+ mpg

I work at Eau Claire Diesel Service, it would be alot cheaper to find an already running diesel pickup, by the time you go through the lift pump and injection pump and injectors, (turbo if it has one) you'll have way more money into that stuff then you would have ever thought. your lookin at about 600-1200 to rebuild the injection pump, 200-400 in the injectors and if the turbo is shot, another 800 in that. You'd be better off dumping a nice 302 in it.
