How do carb and transmission work together on a 1963 T-Bird?

Asked by carlimann Oct 19, 2015 at 03:50 PM about the 1963 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I live in Germany and own a 1963 T-Bird. Its hard to find somebody here, who
can work on my car. The problem I have is this: the transmission shifts up and
down very smoothly. Just before the car comes to the stand though, at the
point of shifting down into the first gear, you hear a loud noise and the whole
car shakes. Somebody told me, that the reason could be, that the carb and
the automatik tranny dont work together properly, are not adjustet to
eachother.
Could that be the reason?
Thanks for your help!

Way back then the only interaction (I'm aware off) was that a few cars used vacuum modulators but from what you are saying it sounds like one of the "Transmission Bands" are a little tight ...there is a "kick-down" from the accelerator however it's best to leave this post open because there are many "experts" that know far more than me

I don't see how it could be anything to do with the carburetor. From your description, it is a transmission problem. I think you can rule out the modulator valve also. The only other thing I can think of might be a vacuum leak.

If engine idle is to fast this might happen.Vacume loss is possible & modulator may have a busted diaphram.

Ive just posted today (10 July) a similar problem with my 390 1963 thunderbird, smooth running etc but a real CLUNK when slowing down and presumably ou of gear anyone solved this problem yet???

Disconnect linkage from carburetor to transmission then see how it shifts.
