How many quarts of oil is needed in the 1966 428?

I need to know the right amount of oil to put into my 1966 with the 428 as i am not sure if I have the proper dipstick..I am thinking it should hold around 5 qts??..but when I added that much I was way over the full line

I'm pretty sure it is 5. Grandpa had a '61 with a 390 which took five. Most of the larger Ford V-8s took 5 quarts with a filter change. Did you change the filter at the same time as the oil? If not, you might only need 4. Your dipstick may also not be correct.

The 428 Qcode motor holds 4 1/2 qrts. of of oil, period. The 428 motor oil for this big block should be changed every 2500 miles... Jeff, Naples, Fl.
