'66 Tbird that wont crank over.

My son's '66 Tbird had a bad episode of run-on. When it finally stopped,
the engine wouldn't crank over. Turn the key, there is just a clicking noise
under the hood near the alternator. We've replaced the starter and the
starter switch and checked the battery. The engine turns freely when
turned by hand, so is not locked up. We are stumped. There is a weird
button under the dash, below the steering column, that was rewired to the
starter switch by a previous owner. Not sure what that button is supposed
to do. Button looks original, but the wiring ins definitely not.

The button probably was installed because the ignition switch did not work. If you turn the key on and then push the button does the car start?
Runon may happen when idle is to high check with Rach 500 rpm is correct. You have voltage problem to starter check all connections & battery voltage.
Trying to get my 66 t bird 390 to crank and getting a clicking noise coming from the Passenger side (stater area) I replaced the The solenoid and positive cable. Any ideas on what next? Car has been siting since 1978 in the garage 42k on car
Start a new thread with your question. This one is 3 years old. In the meantime, remove all the spark plugs and see if the engine will turn over by hand. If not, fill all the cylinders, through the spark plug holes, with Marvel's Mystery Oil and let it sit for two weeks. Then try turning it by hand again. If it still won't turn you're going to have to pull the heads to see what's going on. You might wind up rebuilding the engine. Forty two years is a very long time to be sitting!! Hope that helps!! Jim
