when i turn the heat selector on the ac runs also whats going on here?

1968 ford thunderbird,climate controlled temps.i move the selector to 76 degrees ,the ac
turns on as well.air blows fine ,something is not telling the ac to turn off

Thunderbird ATC systems lacked the economy/vent option until 71-2 and the 6th generation. This was the only way to deactivate the compressor above freezing ambient temps. In all other active settings the cabin sensors would cycle the compressor intermittently.
