For BMW I would use European Formula Mobil1 in a 0w40 grade and change it at 7,500 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first. If you do only short trips (5 miles or less) and lots of city driving, change the oil at 5,000 miles or 1 year.

I use castrol edge 5w-30 and that's what says on every bmw's engine oil cap.
