How can I tell if my 98 z3 is a v6 by looking at the outside only it has a spoiler 5lugs is there any tell tail sign or standard collar or trim package that will differ between the 4 and 6

Not really. First off, the engine options are a 1.9 liter 4 cylinder and a 2.5 or 2.8 liter inline 6. There is no V6. The 4 cylinder will be badged 1.9, while the 2.5 liter 2.3i, and the 2.8 liter 2.5i (or 2.8i, not sure. BMW was weird with naming these cars). Your best bet is to just open the hood and look.

Also, 4 cylinder models have a single exhaust outlet. 6 cylinders will have two.
