Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2004 f150 4.6 liter v8,
overdrive has gone out and driving
the truck now in drive. My question is
could the transmission be hurt doing
on the average 50mph in just drive
and not overdrive?

Apparently the transmission already has a problem if top gear does not work. You will probably see reduced fuel economy.
Yes it just yesterday started this problem of shifting to neutral instead of overdrive. But if I push the button to cut overdrive off it does fine in drive. I think after all that I have read I think the retaining ring on overdrive servo has broken. I will have to drive it until I can get it fixed $$$$&. Other than loss in fuel economy, could I hurt the trans if doing between 45 @ 50mph @ 2000rpm. My fluid is good color and does not smell burnt and at correct level when hot. How fast is too fast for the drive gear only?
I have the same truck, 2004 Ford F150 4.6ltr Triton V8, my overdrive is out as well. Seems like a common problem. Honestly if this is a common problem Ford should fix it free of charge!!! I was also told by a mechanic that the front servo has a problem of the clip breaking and falling down into the valve causing it not to shift into overdrive.
I have the same question so Can I DRIVES THE TRUCK JUST AS IT IT DIDN'T HAVE OVERDRIVE.

THE OVER DRIVE IS OUT ON MY 04 F150 AS WELL, RUNS FINE OFF AS I DRIVE TOWN ONLY BUT KILLING ME IN GAS. I WORK FOR AN AUTO REPAIR AND THIS IS VERY COMMON IN THIS TRUCK! FORD IS AWARE OF IT :(
