2000 F-150 won't start,

Asked by Sam Nov 03, 2015 at 07:40 PM about the 2000 Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

STARTING PROBLEM I have a 2000 ford f150 5.4L the truck cranks but will not start some times. Not getting any check engine lights or codes found.
It has $25 worth of fuel in it and oil is full. Can anyone help me please.

Have you replaced the spark plugs? Your truck probably has a lot of miles and although Ford says the plugs will go 100,000 miles it is better to replace them sooner. Is the fuel pump working? Your problem might very well be the fuel pump. If you can bang on the fuel tank where the pump is and the truck starts then you know it needs a new fuel pump!

What kind of an answer is that? bang on the fuel tank? If it is a fuel issue, and it very well might be, fuel pressure should be checked. If the fuel pump is not running usually indicates an electrical problem of some sort.

Seriously Rowe I had that problem on my F-150 because the contacts in the fuel pump were worn and it would not start sometimes and a swift kick to the tank jarred it loose. It is a way to identify the problem. I am not offering it as a solution but as a quick and easy way to possible diagnose the problem. A 2000 F-150 is likely to need a new fuel pump if it has not been replaced before. This is the voice of experience. Have a good one!

Sorry for that, really, but that is what exactly what you should have posted the first time, it makes more sense. How would you like some one telling you to go out and bang on your gas take without a good explanation, just pointing out how it sounded.

Rowe - if you carefully read my post I made it clear that this is a diagnostic method. I learned this trick from a Ford mechanic. "If you can bang on the fuel tank where the pump is and the truck starts then you know it needs a new fuel pump!" Have a good one and thanks!

Now the last two times you explained perfectly well, your first post, not as I would take it as an electrical problem and be looking at the connections & wires in that area. Really, just trying to give you another view point on what one could read into an answer. See, I took it wrong...
