Whats wrong with my breaks?

I came home today and my truck was
sitting in my driveway with white
smoke coming out from under the
hood, it looked like the wires next too
the brake fluid had burnt up and it
smelled like burning rubber, I crunk
my truck up to see if it would work
and it did but when I tried to change
gears from park to drive, it was like
my breaks were locked up and I
couldnt switch gears. I drive a ford
f150 can someone tell me what is
wrong please?

these brakes must have been dragging....seen rotors glow cherry red ('71 fiat 850) and if the sensor wires are in such a vulnerable area would start looking towards TSB's and Recalls for this very problem...these things do not happen by themselves by are designed in by "smartypants" youngergeneration designers~

Brakes....hopefully brakes...not BREAKS....give me a break (brake)~
CALL THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY WITH YOUR VIN! There is a recall on a brake switch that has burned up many an F-series truck, SUV and cars. The brake pressure switch leaks brake fluid and shorts out causing a fire even with the engine off. THERE ARE RECALLS ADDRESSING THIS!

I agree with Tracy, also there is a safety interlock which prevents you from putting it into gearwithout your foot on the brake, which is controlled by the brake switch. If brake wires burnt that would be why you can't get it in gear.
Don't know if the recall pertains to your vehicle, but I got one on my 2003 Explorer for the same problem. Easy to replace. The service manager instructed me to pull up to the back service doors, turn off the engine, and pop the hood. The mechanic changed it right there. Took longer for the service personnel to enter the info and print out receipt than fix the problem.
