1996 f150 not statrting

Asked by Doug1968gmc Sep 12, 2016 at 01:58 PM about the 1996 Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 96 f150 that has been parked for a few years. passed it on to my
son, replaced the alternator, worked great for a week or so. then wont
start, battery light is on, checked battery with multimeter, showing 12.5v
and volt gauge is reading maybe 9v. tried boosting... no change so i put a
different battery in to check, still , just a click. i cleaned the battery cables
and clamps. wondering where the loss of power is, also smacked the
starter , no change, and when trying to start, the volts go to about 11.5v.

It sounds like a short in the starter. Remove it and have it tested for free at your local parts supplier.

On your fenderwall near battery there's a relay. Ur positive vattery xable is connected to it, first see that small wire is plugged in. If it is, bypass relay either by jumping small terminal to the battery side terminal. If it works, let me know and I'll tell u what to do next, if it still doesn't work, jump positive battery cable directly to the other side of relay that goes to starter, let me know what happens
