Rattling engine at idle 1995 F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1995 Ford F-150 4.9 L inline 6
Manuel transmission. It's been great,
however, when it's idling from a cold start it
runs rough. Over time I figured out that I
could give it some gas for around 3 mins
before driving, and being the engine up to
temperature and avoid all the engine
knocking. However, recently I've been
brining the car up to temperature and the
noise pursists. Wondering if anyone had
any ideas to what this could be? It runs
soomth when I'm driving and one the gas,
but rattles and knocks when idling.. any
help is appreciated!

How often was the oil changed? Generally, the rattling occurs because the oil has not made its way up to the top of the engine. As engines get older, oil pressure can take a little while to the oil to the top of the engine. Check the oil level and pull oil cap and take a look inside the valve cover. It may have oil deposits or crud.

Is the engine missing? You can check and re-gap the plugs to specs and see if it helps. Cost nothing.
