most readers for trouble codes these days shut it off automaticly! go to harbor freight for 40bucks, cheaper on sale! you should have one anyway as cars that get old become very problematic you can thank the piece a sh-- whorthless management of automobiles trying to save $10 on one car by using steel wireing instead of copper,to get vital information to the computer. these rust inside the coatings/insulator and end up with a thousand bad connections due to rust you can open any wire and it will be rusty, as usual just BAD MANAGEMENT I'm an auto worker for 30 yrs and they allways TELL ME to use bad parts.and sometimes I have too! regardless of what I want,or scream at the management write your auto company of choice they ALL do it and tell them how bad of a human being they are screwin millions of people outta billions of dollars just so they can look good LOL see it all the time AMC/chrysler worker

I am constantly leaving the plug disconnected after servicing the air cleaner and this sets off the engine light. I refuse to go to a dealer to get it turned off. It's time someone answered the question without giving you a song and dance, so here goes: Tired of all the advice and want to reset your check engine light? Plug in the scanner with the engine on and let it run. When it gives you a code hit "enter" it will ask you "Erase - yes - no" select "yes" and watch the light go out. If it comes back on, THEN get service.
