Radiator fans not running

Asked by Bcmiles80 Sep 15, 2016 at 10:04 PM about the 2005 Buick LeSabre

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Yesterday, I changed my radiator fluid in my 2005 Buick Lasabre. I drove the
car about ten miles today, and noticed that the engine was getting a bit hotter
than normal. I've been monitoring the temperature all day. Tipically running
185-200, but later this afternoon, it spiked to 220ies.

So I let it cool down, and as I was sitting there, I realized that I put the wrong
coolant in it(greenish/yellow). So I ran to auto store and got some Dex-Cool.
Let it cool down again, drained and replaced coolant with the Dex-Cool.

Turned the engine on and poured more coolant into the radiator. I let it run for
5-10 mins and the engine started to get hot, but the fans never turned on and
the hoses to the radiator and engine block seemed empty of fluid.

I'm stuck. Help.

You should get it flushed, those two coolants are not compatible. Afterwards, if you were low then the coolant temperature sensor probably was left dry and couldn't function, it needs to be in contact with coolant not air, so the fan control never turned on fans. I'd get it up to a radiator shop and get it flushed and new coolant. They should be able to explain to you what else needs to be done. Also, if you do you're own coolant flush or change fluid you have to take your time to get all trapped air out of the system.

Took it to a repair guy. Thermostat was sticking. Thanks for the help, car gurus and Ken.

You may have unplugged a connector for the fans when you were changing the coolant.

See this post from JS. This is the Right diagnosis to rule out A problem with wiring, fans, relays and fuses. Easy solution for diagnosis. It’s probably a temperature sensor issue
