You will want to get a Haynes manual for this. Dashboard removal can be complex and involve shutting off airbags, etc., so I would definitely recommend purchasing a manual before attempting to do this.

Hello, Did you ever get the information you were looking for? I have a 2002 LeSabre and have a problem with the dash pad having separated and "buckled" up in the area infront of the steering wheel. The dealer claims they have never seen such a problem before. I'm going through GM reps now trying to get them to fix it. Was this a similar problem as your? I'm trying to find out if others have had the same problem to try to establish a faulty design/wotkmanship so that GM will take responsibility for it. So I'd appreciate a reply from all readers with a similar problem. Any info you have will be appreciated. Thank you!

I noticed yesterday that I'm having the same problem. I live in Texas so heat/sun may be the issue. What did you get resolved if anything. Thanks

I have a 2002 LeSabre that has the same problem as well. My dealer also told me that I was the first one they had seen. Both my rear window regulators went out as well. I think there is a manufacturing defect. Thanks

2004 LaSabre same problem, have seen several that are having the sepration problem. GM should make this a recall, could cause passenger side airbag to deploy. Maybe we should think class action

2004 LeSabre with a popped dashboard between steering wheel and front glass. Cannot force the dash back into position. Dealer said I would have to pay for a new dash. Sounds like a design problem to me. Any ideas on getting this fixed???

I also have a 2004 LeSabre with a "bubbled" dash. We live in Florida and fiqured it was the heat. I'm not sure if there is a repair, as it may involve glueing the cover down and securing it until the glue bonds. I will be trying this very soon. This will unfortunitly make the dash perminent with no chance of graceful removal. As for design problem, I strongly agree. These design flaws are the very reason GM slid from #1.

I have a 2003 lesabre that is doing the same thing. It just started about a month ago. I came out of the house one afternoon and noticed it had seperated from the pad just under the windshield and right in front of the steering wheel. How did you replace it

Yes I have the exact same problem with my 2002 buick lesabre. Lets work together to get GM to fix our problem free. This is completely unacceptable and presents a potential safety hazard. GM shoud do a recall for this problem. Want to join forces?

I have a 2003 with a problem just like you describe.........did GM stand behind this???? I thought with it being a 2003 and it is now 2010, that no one would stand behind this at all.......my car only has 42,000 miles on it....It has been very well kept, but to leave one morning very recently, and discover my dash looking like this, I am sick.........would be interested to know what happen to yours, and how it was fix......one shop said they would repair by removing the wind shield rather than taking the dash all apart......?????? jenilane60@aim.com

250

I was told they would remove the windshield to fix it for about 250.00..........providing they did not break the glass......if they broke the glass add another 75.00!!!!!! I will most definetly go in with any one who would want to take this up with GM !!!!!!

Hi, my Mom has a 2001 LeSabre and his having similar dash pad problems. Did you ever get any help from GM? From the posts here, I'm worried about the passenger air bag and need to advise my Mom what to do.

I've replaced all but one regulator in my 2001 LeSabre myself, takes some time to do yourself but I researched on line, bought the regulator on line and found how to install it on line too.. Recently the dash started separating, and I am very disappointed because it looks horrible. It doesn't look like it's easily fixable based on my research. But I love my Buick!

My Mom stopped by a car repair place today & they told her they can fix it by removing the windshield. It'll cost a couple hundred dollars, but they said they won't be responsible if they break the windshield. So it could run more $$$ if they damage the windshield. I'm guessing once the windshield is removed, they can apply more glue under the dash & it'll be as good as new. I'm still a bit worried about the passenger airbag.

My Mom had her 2001 repaired this week. $700 for new dash and approx $500 to install - this was done at the dealer and they did not remove the windshield.

why do you think the windshield would have to be removed, just to pull the dash, she got off cheap,at my dealer it would have cost that much just for labor,it is not really that bad of a job,but you got to know what you are doing.

submit a complaint like I did. You will find GM is couteous but unwilling to do a recall even the passenger could be at risk for an airbag deployment. This could be potentially lethal. I encourage you and all others to go through the formal complaint process like myself so GM will have a record. In this way if something unfortunate happened it would be on record their customers brought this to their attention and they refused to do anything to help the customer do a repair. The dealership quoted me 979 dollars. The number you want to call is 313-556-5000.

Call GM and go through the formal process even though you will be denied so a record can be on file in case a passenger death with the airbag deploying happens. Call GM Corporate 313-556-5000 and file a complaint. ALos call the National Safety Transportation Board in Washington DC. This dasboard separating will only get worse over time. I can't belive GM is treating its customers with such disrespect in doing the right thing.

I am so glad I found this post. The dash on my mom's 2001 Lesabre started to separate and kept rising. It was about 6 inches and the dealer wanted over $1000 for parts and labor to fix it. I checked Auto parts warehouse and what they sell is a dashboard cover. Is this the same as the dashmat? (that is what the dealer called it).

My wife's 2003 Buck LeSabre dash has buckled in front of the steering wheel and is slowly moving to the passenger side now. The buckle in front of the steering wheel is now so high that it is becoming a driving hazard. aiat has pulled away from around the heads up display as well. No way I can afford to fix it, GM should be made to repair all defective dash pads and they have to know because there are so many.

Way to go. I am still waiting for my formal papers with NTSB. I already filed a formal complaint with GM. What a joke GM is on taking accountability on defective assembly. At least Toyota owned up and did a recall more than I can say for GM. Lets band together and make sure GM gives back a insignificant amount what we taxpayers gave them. Its not like we are asking for hand-out like they did. No we are simply asking for them to stnad behind their prodict they manufacture for consumers because without us GM is nothing!

HE SAID THE MORE COMPLAINTS WE GET ABOUT THIS DASH PEELING THE MORE CHANCE THEY WOULD ISSUE A RECALL. EVERYONE IN HERE GIVE "EM" HELL. JD THESE CARS FROM 2000 --2005 NEEDED A RECALL WHEN THEY CAME OFF THE ASSEMBLY LINE. EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM IS A PIECE OF CRAP. Thanks POPEYE99. I filed a complaint at the National Safety Transportation Board in Washington DC and they claimed I would have to complete a form that would arrive at my house within 3 weeks. Well its been 7 weeks and no complaint form has arrived. That is what you call negligence with our government. Its kinda kike they may have a vested interest in GM? Hmmh, that is right they still own 50% of the company. But being the renlentless person I am, I will contact them again and may even get our troubleshoooter at our local news sttation involved. GM needs to stand behind their product and will one day look back and wish they had respected their customers by doing the right thing.

Hello, I have been watching this post for several months...I have a 2001 LeSabre Limited with the dash problem. I also have various issues with the lights on the dashboard, steering wheel radio controls, and thermostat controls on the dash not being lit any longer, I just assume it is due to the dash separating. Finally, as I was driving down the highway a couple days ago, the car started the audible beeps and my AIR BAG light came on!!! I moved my seat all the way back and started using both hands on the steering wheel not knowing what was going to happen. So the car definitely knows there is an issue with the air bag system. My dash is separated more than 50% now and it has been garage kept the entire time I've owned it (5 years), the dash was fine when I bought it. I need to use the car daily, so I took the air bag fuse out in hopes that it in fact will disable the system until I get it resolved. I will be filling out the complaint form ASAP!!!

SAME HERE KH,CALLED NHTSA 1-888-327-4236 SAID I WOULD RECEIVE PAPERS IN 4 TO 6 WEEKS. 3 MONTHS NO PAPERS. CALLED AGAIN TOLD ME THE SAME THING. I TOLD THE PERSON I WAS TALKING TO I HOPE I GET THEM THIS TIME OR I WILL FILE A COMPLAINT AGAIN,WE ARE NOT GOING AWAY. THINK THEY WANT US TO FORGET IT AND BUY ANOTHER NEW BUICK. DON'T THINK SO. I'VE BEEN AT THIS FOR 9 MONTHS,NOT QUITTING NOW,MINE STARTED(DASH PEELING) WHILE UNDER WARRANTY,STILL DIDN'T GET IT FIXED. BUICK SERVICE REP.(NICOLE JOHNSON 866-790-5600) SAID THE MORE COMPLAINTS ARE FILED GM WOULD WOULD HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

4 people found this helpful.
260

Here's the steps I learned that we need to take. First call Buick at 1-800-790-5600. You will then be prompted to put in an extension number. I was lucky enough for a young man named Ryan to give me his ext. number, which is #-32907. He will ask you several questions so have your VIN # and all necessary info ready. Though my dash pad had already been examined he said I would have to take it to a dealer in my area that we agreed upon. After giving me directions on what to do as well as documenting what I was telling him, he told me to take it to the dealer noting that I would have to pay for any expense to have it checked out. After having it checked I then had to call him back which I did do. I called and made an appointment with the dealer explaining to them that I was directed by GM to do this. On the day of my appointment the service manager along with a service writer documented all of my info, examined the dash pad, and agreed with me that it was "awful". They acted as if they had never seen one do this but I told them that they niether have never owned one or never looked at one anywhere in a parking lot or on the highway because every model like this had buckled dash pads. They were very professional and nice about it so I returned the favor. The service manager said that he would have to turn it over to the "field representative" and they would get back to me. It only took about 15 minutes once they got to me, but to my surprise there was no charge for them to check it over. The representative turned me down and said the car was to old (2003) even though it is like new except for the dash pad! After going through all of this I then sent an email to safecar.gov/Vehicle+Owners. This is the website for the NHTSA to file a safety complaint. For the entire experience from start to finish no matter who with, or where you are discussing this matter, always stress that it is about safety - your safety - the drivers' safety. When you go to the website there will be a few steps to follow before they will send you a complaint form. You can get it mailed to you or you can get it by email. I chose email and had mine done and over with the very next day. This is jumping through a lot of hoops but now all safety complaints about my unsafe dash pad along with VIN# are documented with GM, the dealer, and the NHTSA. In every complaint I stress that I fear for my safety everytime I or anyone drives this vehicle. If my air bag ever deploys or if I am in an accident because of an impaired view due to this dash pad, all safety complaints are documented. Make sure you write down and document everyone you speak with, the time, the date and etc.. We need everyone who owns one of these cars to do the same I have descibed here. Everytime I get a chance to talk with someone who has one of these cars I give them this information and ask them to follow through. I have written down the number to GM, the extension number, and the website and made copies to keep on hand. This way if I am at the mall or supermarket or gas station, anywhere I see someone driving one of these Buicks, I can hand them the info with a brief explanation on what they can do to try and help get GM to do something about this safety hazard. I know this is a very long email and will take some patience to follow through with but if enough of us follow these steps we might get lucky.

Thanks joogy123, i have went through all the steps you wroye about and they told me the same thing. car is too old 39,000 miles. told them it was not about the age it was a safety concern. Filed a complaint with the NHTSA, haven't got papers yet. Spoke to GM rep.(lady) she was polite and then said we were going through the right steps for a recall but who knows how long it will take. the more people file a complaint about this (dash peeling) the better. i have been at it for about 9 months. Buick keeps calling me back but says nothing different.

Not only DRIVING HAZARD JOGGY BUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND GM"S REASONING. SAME PROBLEM FROM 2000 THROUGH 2005. AND IT MAKES THE CAR LOOK LIKE CRAP. NOT VERY GOOD ADVERTISING. SOMEONE ON HERE SAID THAT NHTSA OWNED A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF GM. CAN'T REMEMBER WHO SAID IT OR FIND IT NOW. I SEND BUICK A EMAIL EVERYDAY TELLING THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEMS WITH THESE MODEL BUICK LESABRE. THE DASH IS NOT THE ONLY THING BUT I THINK I WILL STAY WITH THE DASH ISSUE JUST NOW. THANKS JOOGY

Thanks for the information. On my 2002 LeSabre, the dashpad came pulled loose and started bunching up in front of the steering wheel. I have tried gluing it back, with limited success, because it is really hard to get to it because of the windshield slant. I also have had to replace the two rear window regulators. In addition, all the lights on the steering wheel mounted controls have gone out, and half the lights on the climate control buttons have gone out. The fuel gauge stays on full all the time, so we have to keep up with the miles driven so we will know when to fill up. If we wait too long, the low fuel light comes on and the dinger dings, and THEN the needle suddenly flips to empty! It's small comfort to know that so many other people have had the same problems. I haven't figured out yet why GM dumped Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Saturn, and kept Buick.

This is pretty ridiculous. My 2000 LeSabre dashboard is also separating from the chassis right under the windshield on the driver side. It's impossible to fix without removing the windshield which requires a third party not to mention money. It has been pulling up for about 6 months and is now starting to buckle up as well. GM absolurely needs to address this issue. I thought I was the only one then yesterday I spotted another LeSabre with the exact same problem. Now I go on the net and find out that it is an ongoing known issue with LeSabre owners. GM needs to fix this problem now!!!

KEITH, I HAVE COME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT BUICK IS NOT GOING TO DO A THING ABOUT THIS DASH ISSUE. " NOT GOING TO STOP ME FROM SENDING THEM A EMAIL A DAY THOUGH. HAD A PHONE # BUT UNFORTUNATELY I LOST IT BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD ONLY RECEIVED 4 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. ( DUH ) I WONDER IF THEY EXPECT US TO BELIEVE THAT! TOLD ME MINE WAS TOO OLD 2003 BUICK LESABRE--41,000 MILES. AGE HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. EVEN FORD MOTOR COMPANY CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY GM WILL NOT ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS DESIGN FLAW AND FIX IT. AND THE FIGHT GOES ON , ROBERT

I AM DISABLED AND MY INS. SAID IT DID NOT COVER IT. FEDERAL GOV. SUCKS. SYAYING IN A FRIEND,S CAMPER. BUT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE DASH ISSUE. GOOD LUCK,I CAN USE ALL I CAN GET AT THIS POINT. I have the same problem with my 2002 LeSabre. The dashboard has buckled up and peeled back all the way across the width of the windshield. I would appreciate any info that may help solve this problem. This is an obvious defect in workmanship which may lead to harmful consequences. jackon@comcast.net

I wanted to add my experience. 2001 LeSabre, the dash has come unglued and bubbled up in front of the driver. (Also, I also have the lights in the climate control system and steering wheel-mounted controls that have gone off, but I really don't think the two are related.) Anywho, my suggestion is to do what I did. First, skip the dealer and skip GM. GM knows about the problem but they don't care--these cars are all at least 6 years old, out of warranty, Buick has moved on and now makes better product with better quality control. GM dealers who claim they have never seen this problem are, quite simply, liars. And we don't want to deal with liars, so let's leave them out of the equation. What you need to do is find a nice Mexican body shop. I live in Texas, so they're all over the place. My guy removed the dash, glued the pad down with a special automotive adhesive, replaced it, all for $85. It doesn't look cosmetically perfect but it is stable. Then I purchased a CoverKing dashmat for $29.95. It looks great and believe it or not, the inside of the car is cooler without the reflected heat from the dashboard. So for a hundred bucks I have a solution that is not perfect, but that I can live with. Just shop around for a body shop that will give you a good price and go from there. These 1000 dollar repairs are as unnecessary as they are frustrating.

Yes I too have a 2002 Buick Lesabre Custom with the same problem mine is continuing to creep over toward the passenger side airbag area. I called GM this week about my safety concerns. Of course they say there are no recalls on this. They say I can take it to the dealership but that I will will be charged a diagnostic fee and whatever it will cost to repair it. If it is dtermined to be a safety issue they may SHARE some of the cost. They id however give me the number to the National Safety Transportation Board in Washington DC, the suggested that I call the number and voice my concerns. If enough of use do that THEN I BELIEVE THEY WILL MAKE IT A RECALL. I THINK IT IS WORTH A SHOT. I AM CALLING ON MONDAY. I AM TIRED OF BEING PUSHED AROUND. I DID NOT ASKED FOR THIS PROBLEM AND I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH IT GETTING WORSE FOR YEARS. IT IS TIME FOR ALL OF US LOYAL GM CUSTOMERS TO MAKE A STAND. Please stand with me! Phone number for National Safety Transportation Board 1-888-327-4236.

Phone number is 1-888-327-4236 makes it easy for everyone to do it. National Safety Transportation Board, I have the same problem with my 2002 Buick Lesabre Custom and it is steadily crawling over to the passenger side afraid of the safety concern of the airbag. We all NEED TO CALL. SO maybe the will recall these once and for all, what is it going to take for someone to die? EVERYONE on here pick up your phones..please!

I totally agree. I have already contacted them and will be mailing them the form. I also contacted GM but as with all other responses I got the brush-off as well. GM cares nothing about its loyal customers!!! Its no wonder GM has lost customers to Ford and Honda and Toyota. God will level the playing field! I also encourage others to call and mail the form so there will be a record so when if this goes to court there will be written evidence that GM knew about this critical defect and chose to do nothing about it.

your car is 9 years old now. its going to start having issues. gm isnt pushing you around. they are just being business smart. when cars get old they have problems and if they fixed everybodys complaints on 9 year old cars they would go out of business very quick.

It's not so much that they're stupid, it's more that they're 1. Probably elderly, 2. Tend to not be that handy around automobiles, 3. Frustrated. There's really no need to be hateful. Look above--I actually made a helpful comment about how easy the problem was to fix. But you don't have anything helpful to say at all. I mean, dude, look at you. You're some big cheesy white guy who makes teenage thug gestures in his profile photo. Quit being a douche and try to help someone out sometime, instead of just calling them stupid.

Well reasoned reply Daniel. I think I'll follow your advice with the Mexican repair shop. The only shop here in Columbia, SC that would tackle the problem was in fact Mexican. But they wanted me to have someone else remove and put back the windshield around the dash work that they were willing to do. At the time it seemed too much of a pain to coordinate two shops to do one job (not to mention more expensive) but I may still use them if I can't find someone else to do it. Chase my car is 10 years old with 110,000 miles. To me 110,000 miles is not a huge amount these days for a car. I probably will buy a new car in the next couple of years. But this is how business smart GM has been in blowing me (and others) off about this defect which I have actually seen in another LeSabre here in town not to mention read about on blogs like this one. My next car will not be a GM product. Now that's smart.

The only way to stop people from being stupid is to tell them that they are in fact being stupid. I explained they need to research how air bags work so they can educate themselves on what they were being stupid about. Maybe you like to make people think it's ok to be ignorant about things but Ive found that being straight forward and telling them what I think has a larger impact if they hate me or not. And your personal attack on my appearance is laughable. At least I'm showing a picture of myself which btw my friends understand to be a funny one.

Yeah, sorry, that pic is my facebook tribute to Charles Nelson Reilly. Usually I have my real picture. And I understand what you're saying about being direct, and telling people when they need to educate themselves. But let me ask you this: If an elderly person, say your grandmother or one of her friends, came to you because you know so much about cars, and expressed her bewilderment and frustration about a problem like this one, would you tell her she needed to do her "gad damn research" and quit being dumb as shit right to her face? I mean, you're right, that would have a bigger impact, but would any sense of shame or restraint stop you from being that nasty? I would hope that that kind of obnoxious, piglike attitude is something that only shows itself on the internet, where there is a buffer of semi-anonymity. I think maybe when you're a little older you'll appreciate the value of not having people hate your guts and thinking you're an obnoxious prick just for the brief thrill of making a larger impact.

Hey Chase, First of all you need to get your facts correct. NOT everyone of us including myself have buick lesabres that are 10 years old. Its quite the opposite; most are less than 10 years old. Its a critical safety hazard that is caused by a manufacturing defect that is quite apparent that GM knows exist. GM needs to man up and do the right thing and you need to do your research before judging others but I will leave that one to my God to iron out. God Bless

17,065

If somebody came and asked about it I'd be understanding. If somebody came bitching about something like that id tell them the same thing but that's not how my family would come to me so it's a non issue

17,065

It's not a safety issue you moron. Research how airbags work. Dash peeling is a cosmetic issue not a safety issue.

265

So far in this blog I've read complaints from LeSabre owners with cars 7 years and older with the same problem. If you scroll up you will see posts from owners with 2003 and 2004 LeSabres. And these are just the cars old enough for the problem to become apparent. There are probably plenty more newer LeSabres that have the same problem that just hasn't manifested itself yet. Now if you think GM pushing out a model that has a dashboard defect like this is OK then I guess you don't expect much from GM in terms of quality. Since this is obviously a known defect GM would be smart to bite the bullet and take care of the problem in the hopes that it keeps their customers satisfied. Would it make a difference if people started reporting that their paint was peeling off their LeSabres after only 7 years? Would tGM feel that was their responsibility or just say 'oh well paint eventually wears off as cars get older'? The smart thing for GM to do to retain customer loyalty is to fix this problem.

Gm offered a 6 year warranty on my gto for paint. So if it peels after that I'm shit ou of luck and I have no issue with that. Gm can't warranty things like you think they should because they can't control what people do to their cars. They can't offer certain warranties to people in wi and ten a different one to people in Florida. Salt on roads corrodes at the body. Same thin for people who park in hit climates outside with the sun beating on the dash that speeds up the dash issue conparedto people who are smart and park in a garage out of the sun, heat and other elements so that their car lasts longer. Like it or not 7 years is getting old for a car. A little dash peeling after 7 years that costs just under $1k to fix isn't bad. Bite the bullet and just fix it. It's not a safety issue so it's something you people need to just deal with.

Way back my question was how to remove the dashcover. That's all I want. Where do I start pulling without breaking something as normal. I have replaced both rear door regulators and a front wheel bearing by myself. Still driving my 1963 F85 convertible that I bought new. Don't want to be cussed at for my 79 years, but just some info

This problem is not like a peeling paint problem, like you seem to think; the dash is actually detached from the lower windshield/firewall area, where it supposed to be attached. Previous years of this same model car never displayed this fault, even with twice as much age and milage, and parked outside. IMO it's a design flaw, obviously these dashes were not secured sufficiently, and GM will not respond unless lives are lost and lawsuits are imminent.

3 people found this helpful.
17,065

There won't be any lives lost over this. What safety hazard do you see this causing?

2 people found this helpful.
445

Are you planning on replacing the dash pad? That might be a good idea, except that when you start pulling on the pad, the places where the glue still has proper adhesion will probably take chunks of the pad with it. So you will have to find a way to remove those chunks. Then where are you going to get the materials to fabricate a new dash pad? Because you know GM only sells the dash as a complete unit. Also, no commercial adhesive that I am aware of is going to make the dash pad stick for more than a few weeks. I have tried them all, from automotive adhesive to Liquid Nails. The dash pad, even after being weighted down with heavy books for 48 hours, popped right back up in a matter of a couple of weeks. You just need to find a body shop that will secure the dash pad with their special adhesives, and then cover it with an aftermarket dash cover.

445

Chase may be a bit of a hotheaded pottymouth, but he is in fact correct that this is not actually a sfety hazard. If you look closely at the place where the dash is separating you will see that the metal dashboard itself is still attached, it's just the pad that's coming loose. From what I have been able to find, the dash cover has nothing to do with the operation of the airbags. The only way I could see it being a safety hazard is if it got so bad it interfered with visibility, but I'm sure no one would ever let it go that far. But that is undoubtedly why GM is wholly unconcerned with this problem--it does not affect safe operation of the vehicle. That doesn't mean it's not annoying and ugly, and that it doesn't affect the value of the car. However, despite what "Captain GTO" says, it's not necessary to get a $1000 repair. Just secure the dash pad and get a carpeted dash mat. I think mine actually looks better.

3 people found this helpful.
17,065

I agree with you. Your way of fixing it seems to be a better route. Replacing the part with a part known to be defective wouldn't be very smart.

1 people found this helpful.
265

I never have considered this a safety issue. I consider it an ethical issue. Perhaps some people think ethics has nothing to do with manufacturing automobiles. If so then ignore my post. I think it shows shoddy workmanship on a particular part on LeSabres. My '88 Park Avenue does not have the problem nor did my Dad's Buicks nor does my sister's Lucerne. I assume the glue used to secure the dash was substandard or the dash was cut too small or maybe even the dash material is substandard. Regardless since it appears to be a recognised problem with LeSabres then I think GM should fix it but they won't. And I reiterate it is also not smart business to blow off all the LeSabre owners this problem has and will affect. How much would it really cost GM to replace/repair these dashes? Not much I would think. Compare that to the money they'll be losing when a customer like me who has owned a few Buicks in his life and comes from a family of GM buyers changes brands.

3 people found this helpful.

I don't know if it is the right way to secure the dashpad or not, but the dealer I took my lesabre to here in MI told me that what they would do if it were them (not that they can do for me) would be to use some sort of adhesive and then some 3/4 in long lag screws and flat washers to hold down the dashpad and then use the aftermarket dash covers to cover it up. I think it sounds like a good idea, but I don't know if we would end up hitting anything with the screws...anyone have any ideas on this method? I am getting sick of looking at this dash peeling up in my face :)

so because of 1 single car bad experience you wont buy another car that doesnt have issues from the same company? to me that doesnt make sense. certain cars are going to have certain issues. its just the way it works. the cooling fans from my old irocs i had, door latch and window motors on my 300c, air ride on my navigator, and now suspension on my gto. i knew all of these cars had these specific issues when i purchased them because i researched about it. yet i still got the car...why? because no matter what 1 certain thing is wrong with a lot of cars. a dash seems to be like a small issue that costs less than what the repairs i ahd to make to my vehicles.

1 people found this helpful.
965

Chase do you own a buick lesabre with the dashboard separating? Its so easy to give advice about this defect without living with it. Folks reading this post please ignore the folks that say its not a problem and its normal for a car's dash to do this that is outside of the warranty. Let GM hear the voice of the consumer not a name caller.

5 people found this helpful.
17,065

I never said it was normal for a dash to peel. I said it's a defect with this certain car. ALL cars have certain issues. Yours is a dash peeling which is simply a one time cosmetic fix if you do it correctly. Not a big deal. Or you could keep bitching and get nowhere. But it makes me laugh that you're miserable with your car and instead of fixing it and just dealing with it or trading it for a different one you choose to bitch. Keep complaining and I'll keep laughing. Keep calling it a safety issue (which it's not) and I'll keep calling you morons.

i've had small cracks after 10+ yrs of ownership of buicks... its usually minor and is expected. after all... plastic has no guaratee to last beyond 5 years. sunlight degrades the materials over time. even though i garage the cars, i still get some deterioation. i'm sure if i left mine outside more, i'd have similar problems as yours. even my uncle's toyota has plastic switches & arm pads that crack too. normal.

Folk like you Chase is what is wrong with this country. When there is a problem we should address it not sweep it under the rug. That is what got GM into the financial mess which the government had to bail them out and they are trying yet once again to sweep another problem under the rug. I agree that cars do not last forever but come on at least a good 8 to 10 years. And we wonder why Toyota and Honda has taken the lead on customer satisfaction and sales. Quality, quality and quality. Something we tried to teach here but no one would listen. Are you listening?

3 people found this helpful.

Toyota and Honda are notorious for under-reporting issues. Pretending the issues don't exist doesn't create a quality product.

BUT IF ME SOUNDED OFF BECAUSE HE PUSHED MY BUTTON, I USUALLY DON'T DO THIS SO AGAIN I REGRET THAT THESE LADIES ON HERE HAD TO HERE THAT. AS FAR AS CHASE GOES MAN YOU HAVE NO CLASS AT ALL. I HAVE NEVER BEEN A RACIST IN MY LIFE BUT YOU JUST LIKE TO SOUND OFF YOUR FOUL MOUTH LIKE MANY MORONS DO. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST YOU PERSONALLY BUT WHY ALL THE STUFF YOU HAVE BEEN SAYING? WE ARE JUST TRYING TO GET AGM TO ADMIT THEY HAD A DESIGN FLAW AND TO FIX IT. THERE IS NO REASON FOR YOU TO COME ON HERE AND RUN DOWN EVERYONE THAT IS GOING THROUGH THIS. UNDOUBTLY THERE WAS A SLIGHT NEGLIGENCE IN YOUR UPBRINGING. WHAT IS THE PISTURE WITH 2 FINGERS STICKING UP? IF YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING POSITIVE THEN WHY SAY ANYTHING. AS I SAID THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE 2000 WITH BUICK LESABRE THROUGH 2005. EVEN THE GM REP. I TALKED TO ADMITS THERE IS A PROBLEM,BUT SHE WAS NOT IN A POSITIONTO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT EXCEPT TAKE THE COMPLAINTS. EVEN SHE SAID WE WERE ON THE RIGHT TRACK BY FILING A COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA.SO WE KEEP SENDING EMAIL TO GM AND FILING COMPLAINTS WITHNHTSA. IF THAT BOTHERS YOU THEN FIND YOU ANOTHER SITE TO COMPLAIN TO BECAUSE I CAN PROMISE YOU YYYYOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT AND EVERYONE WILL IGNORE YOU. YOU GIVE $28,000.00 FOR A CAR AND YOU EXPEGT MORE THAN THIS FROM A COMPANY AS BIG AS GM. CUT THE LITTLE GIRLS FACE UP SOME BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT DESIGNED FOR CHILDREN. SORRY I LOST THE PAPER AND ARTICLE AND PAPER. EVEN GM SAID IT MUST HAVE JUST BEEN A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAB.( DUHHHH ). GM DOES NOT CARE AND MY EMAIL I AM SENDING IS GETTING PRETTY RAUNCHY. I COULD CARE LESS. BUT THEY STILL GET ONE FROM ME EVERY WEEK. TOLD THEM NOT TOBOTHER CALLING BACK, TIRED OF HEARING THEIR LIES.THAT WENT OVER LIKE A LEAD BALLOON BUT AT THIS POINT I COULD CARE LESS. BUT I AM STILL SENDING GM AND NHTSA AN EMAIL ONCE A WEEK AND TELLING THEM THAT TOYOTA AND FORD STOOD UP TO THEIR PROBLEM AND FIXING IT ,OR TRYING TO AT LEAST. GM IS A JOKE. GOOD LUCK AND KEEP ON SENDING THEM EMAILS.THEY CAN'T IGNORE US FOREVER. FOR ME IT HAS BECOME PERSONAL. IN AUGUST MY BROTHER AND I ARE GOING TO LOAD IT ON HIS FLATBED AND CARRY IT TO GM HEADQUARTERS. THEN GO TO THEIR LOCAL NEWSPAPER AND GIVE THEM THIS WEBSITE. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. THANKS AND GOD BLESS,ROBERT

As I've stated every single car has flaws. All of them. This is nothing more than a cosmetic issue and I'm telling you people that think it's more than that you're wrong. If it's not covered user warranty you will never see anything happen. You're wasting time and complaining about how GM is handling it is also dumb. I tried explaining that as well but I get the same repeated argument over and over again with nothing that backs up their claims. "it's a safety issue". No it's not!!! Get the car fixed and be done with it. A person here posted how to do so fairly cheap.

1,555

JUST REPEATING WHAT I READ CHASE. MAYBE THEY RAN OFF THE EDGE OF THE WORLD AND HIT THE SOUTH "POLE", I HAVE NO IDEA HOW IT GOT DEPLOYED. THAT WAS WHAT IT SAID IN THE ARTICLE I READ. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP CALLING EVERYONE "STUPID AND MORON AND EVERY OTHER FOUL WORD YOU CAN THINK OF).WE ARE NOT ALL RIGHT ABOUT THIS SITUATION AND NOT WRONG EITHER. WE ARE JUST DOING WHAT GM TOLD US TO DO AS FAR AS REPORTING ALL OF THIS INCLUDING TO THE NHTSB. IF THE ADHESIVE WORKS ,GREAT. GIVE ME THE NAME OF IT AND I WILL TRY IT.AS FAR AS BEING A MORON OR STUPID,I KNOW I AM ABOUT SOME THINGS.BUT I DO NOT GET ON A FORUM LIKE THIS WHERE LADIES AND KIDS READ IT. OWNED MY OWN TRUCK LINE FOR 9 YEARS. YOU CAN'T DO THAT BEING A MORON OR STUPID. CAR PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF ME AND I HIT THE DITCH INSTEAD OF HITTING THE CAR WHICH HAD 3 KIDS IN THE BACK SEAT. LOST USE OF MY LEFT LEG FROM KNEE DOWN AND REPLACED TWO DISC IN MY NECK. TOOK ME ALMOST 2 YR. TO LEARN TO WALK AGAIN.SOLD OUT MY TRUCK LINE BECAUSE I COULD NOT GIVE IT 100%. THIS DASH THING IS JUST A DESIGN FLAW THAT GM NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF NO MATTER HOW( OLD) THE CAR IS. AND THE FLAW WAS BETWEEN 2000-2005. AS I SAID MINE STARTED 6 MONTHS AFTER I PURCHASED THE CAR. GAVE $28,000.00 FOR IT. WOULD YOU NOT BE A LITTLE UPSET BECAUSE THEY WOULD NOT FIX IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY? WAS TOLD THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. THEY COULD REPLACE IT BUT IN 6 OR7 MONTHS IT WOULD DO THE SAME THING.A GM REP SAID THEY WERE WORKING ON IT ( IFYOU CAN BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY SAY). SAID THEY WOULD LET ME KNOW WHEN THEY CAME UP WITH AN ADHESIVE THAT WOULD WORK AND NOT LOOK LIKE CRAP. IF THIS DOES NOT CONCERN ( IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BUICK LESABER WITH THIS PROBLEM THEN WHY ALL THE FOUL LANGUAGE AND CALLING EVERYONE ON HERE STUPID AND MORONS?I PROBABLY HAVE GRANDCHILDREN OLDER THAN YOU AND YOU TAKING GOD'S NAME IN VAIN......WELL SOMEDAY YOU WILL STAND BEFORE GOD AND ANSWER FOR ALL THIS. HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT DAY AND GOD BLESS, ROBERT

17,065

Of course I wouldn't be happy about it if I had this issue. Nobody would. But I've tried telling people here repeatedly it's not a safety issue and yet I get arguments about it even after I told them to look up how air bags work. When you continue to argue things that you're wrong about that makes you an idiot. You can read to find the person who posted the solution to this as a cheap fix.

1,555

I HAVE READ HOW AIRBAGS WORK. JUST BECAUSE I DON.T AGREE WITH YOU DOES NOT MAKE ME AN IDIOT. JUST BECAUSE YOU SAY IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE RIGHT. STAY CALM AND HAVE AN INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION. HAVE A GOOD DAY, ROBERT

YOU HAVE YOUR OPINION AND I HAVE MINE. WILL NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING WITH YOU ANY FARTHER. THIS IS USELESS. HAVE A GOOD DAY. ROBERT

WELL PUT DANIEL. THIS IS AN ISSUE WE HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH FOR A LONG TIME. WE DO NOT NEED CHAPLIP OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS AND ALL HIS FOUL LANUAGE.

You know you are an clown. You remind me of someone who just has to have the last word and yours is always right. Grow up and get a job

when my word is right then yes i make a point of it. when im wrong ill admit im wrong. in this case im right. and i have a very good job. shame on you for assuming i dont.

My 2000 Lesaber has the same problem. it is shrinking to the extent that it is connected only one third across the dash

1,555

THIS WAS NOT ADRESED TO ME BUT SOMEONE (I FORGET WHO) IF YOU WIL SCROL ON DOWN YOU WIL FIND THE ANSWER HE GAVE AND THE NUMBER TO CAL TO GM AND THE # FOR NHTSA. I DIDN'T GLUE MINE DOWN ,JUST PUT A COVERKING DASH MAT OVER IT. SONER OR LATER GM WIL ACEPT THE RESPONIBILITY THAT IT WAS A DESIGN FLAW AND MAYBE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE A 203 LESABRE AND IT DOSE THE SAME THING. MINE STARTED 6 OR 7 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT IT UNDER WARANTY AND THEY STIL WOULD NOT FIX IT.THAT WAS OVER 10 YR. AGO AND I STIL SEND THEM AN EMAIL A WEEK AND TO THE NHTSA. IT HAS BECOME PERSONAL NOW.ALL WE CAN DO IN HERE IS KEEP SENDING EMAIL AND SHOW THEM WE ARE NOT GI VING UP. GOD LUCK AND LET US

1,555

ONE MORE TIME I WIL TALK TO YOU. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY RECALS BUICK LESABRA HAS HAD SINSE IHAVE HAD IT. TRANSMISION,HEADLIGHTS,INTERIOR LIGHTS,GAS GUAGE,WATER LEAK AT THE REAR OF THE ENGINE.AND THE LIST GOES ON. LOCAL DEALER DID NOT WANT TO FIX ANY OF THEM,BUT ONE CALL TO GM CHANGED THEIR MIND. AIR-BAGS-AND THE LIST GOES ON . SE YA ASHOLE

17,065

Post the GM recalls for these issues. Prove it. You claim this and that but offer no proof. If I look it up and post it I'll provide an article to support me saying differently from you. I'll give you a chance to post first proving ALL the recalls you just claimed. If you can't go off yourself because now you're a proven liar

1,555

i have called gm numerous times and emailed them. and i have filed a complaint with nhtsajust like everyone else on here. ther have been no recalls yet ,that is what we are working for. THERE WILL BE NO MORE CONVERSATION BETWEEN YOU AND ME. I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING. IF GM DECIDES NOT TO ISSUE A RECALL THEN THAT IS THAT.

I have been looking at ALL Le Sabre's since I noticed this same problem in mine. THEY ALL HAVE IT! This is definitely an issue. If they do recalls, they will have to recall All of them. Good Luck. Anybody expecting the "NEW" Government to do anything to "it's friends" is also a FOOL. Just tell everybody what a piece of garbage your Le Sabre Dashboard is and buy a $40.00 dash cover.

Hi..same dash pad buckling by the drivers side and working it's way slowly to the passenger side problem with my 'new' 2001 Buick Lesaber Limited (Purchased in South Florida)..I know your post is from 2008..you may not even have the car anymore - all web research shows many folks having this issue and GM has not taking any responsibility, expensive to replace, no real documented glue down and screw instructions offered anywhere...-- clearly a design or installation at the factory issue --

Mine has buckled on 2004...my dealer says they have seen before. Did you have any luck with factory rep. Dealer says $750. Now one key fob has "quit" Suggestions?

For all those buick lesabres in North Carolina that have top dashboard separating from the plastic panel (manufacturing defect) I will be glad to discuss options including possible repair minus travel charges. My email address is khobgood2@embarqmail.com. Please send me the year, model and a picture of the the top dashboard with a sheet of white paper beside it for contrast comparison.

Read my August 18th post. Don't give GM one cent on a problem they should fix free. This is a manufacturing defect.

my buick did the same thing and i would like to know if you got anywhere with your fight.........mike

Yes, Mine Is The Same Way! I Have A 2001 Buick LeSabre Limited With 161,000 Mi. Drove it to work one day, next day went to check wiper blades & Saw the dash pad pulled away from the metal defroster vent plate. My Car is always spotless & Detailed, Engine compartment also. When I Saw That I Was Irate. I Have To Pull Whole Dash out To Change Out An AC Evaporater, gonna try and see if I Can't fix it while the dash is out. If You Would Keep Us Posted On What GM Says They'll Do About It. It Would Be Very Much Appreciated!! Thanx!! Good Luck!!

@kh Have You heard anything on the Dash mat yet? You are correct, I've been turning a wrench for 30 years now, and there is no way I will do a nickel & Dime fix to my car, It will be done the right way. Bought My 2001 Buick LeSabre Limited In 2006 for $6,000.00, It looked like it just rolled off the show room floor. I Have detailed every inch of that car once a week for the last 5 years to keep it looking that way. I agree with POPEYE99 also If I Paid $28,000.00 for a car, under warranty, I would expect at least 10 years of service out of that car or more.Replaced some moving (Or Waring) Parts on it, But the dash does not move, it is not in the sun hardly at all, ALWAYS Garaged, AND I keep the interior very clean & detailed, that is what leads me to believe that the dash mat is a Defective part (Because of the shrinking) or craftsmanship building this piece. SHAME ON YOU GM!!!!! I THINK MY NEXT CAR WILL BE A FORD!!! And @ CHASE.............Evidently you don't know how an airbag system works either, why do you think in all the car repair manuals they say to be very careful working around the airbag???.....BECAUSE IT'S DANGEROUS MORON!!! At The Shop We would set the old steering wheel with airbag still in it on the ground outside and (I won't Say how) set it off. (did not take much to set it off) shot into the air a pretty good distance. I would not want to get hit with one again. People Also Die who are uneducated about airbags who work around airbags, I know from personal experience.

Don't get into this again. The impact sensors set off airbags. A peeling dash cover won't.

HE IS A TROUBLE MAKER SO JUST IGNORE HIM. I HAVE REPORTED HIM TO GAR-GURU PANEL AND ACTION WILL BE TAKEN. HIS LANGUAGE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE ON HERE BECAUSE THERE ARE LADIES IN THIS ROOM. I SOLD MY BUICK BUT I AM STILL IN TOUCH WITH GM ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE NOW OWNER. POPEYE

Lol "ladies" in the room. You do realize that women swear too right? And reporting somebody?...are we in kindergarten now being a tattle tale? Jesus get over it. Btw getting me banned will only make me laugh. Typically I help people solve issues. You can see that from my ranking. Remove me fine. Bur when your car breaks down I won be around to tell you what's wrong. Also I'm a firm Believer when people are stupid they need to know it so they can fix it. Triaxial accelerometers are used to recognize impacts and trigger air bags. A peeling dash won't trigger these. It's not a safety hazard. You people are buying $5000 cars and expecting them to be msrp. Get over it. Pay for the fix and be done with it. If it was a $20k car with this issue I could understand being upset but the car is worth nothing now.

1,555

' Chase " I owe you an appology. i should not have said what i did about you. you seem to be a fairly intelligent man. it is just the foul words we could do without. As far as the air bag being triggered by the dash peeling, even the GM technician said it had never been tested that way. and, it may trigger the airbag (dash peeling) or it may not. but you have to admit paying that much for a car and the dash start peeling sucks. As far as reporting you to "gar guru" i was just yanking your chain. maybe you are right. we will just have to wait and see. In the meantime GOD BLESS AND HAVE A GOOD DAY

1,555

ALMOST FORGOT. PAID $28,789.00 NOT $5,000.00 FOR THE BUICK IN DEC. 2002. IT STARTED PEELING BEFORE THE WARRANTY WAS OUT BUT GM REFUSED TO FIX IT.

130

I have a 2002 LeSabre.....same dash cover separation problem. I've read all the posts for 6 months and the facts are: Buick will do nothing, it can't be fixed and the cost to replace the cover is about $800. My solution is to find a way to make the cover look better by placing a shim between the cover edge and the slot where it slipped out of. I used 3 inch finishing nails. Push the point of the nail into the front edge (for about 1 inch), slide the nail to the right and jam it into the slot. I did this yesterday and the cover is down so I can see the bottom of the windshield and it looks so much better. I can live with it and the fix cost practically nothing.

I have the same problem with my '03 Lesabre. GM denied me any assistance so I filed a complaint with NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Administration). Complaint forms are readily available on their website and if they receive enough complaints they will force GM to assist consumers who have this problem. If we all file complaints, we may have a chance to recover all or some of our repair costs. I can be contacted at " olemansteve@comcast.net".

HI all, I kinda doubt that Buick will ever own up to provide a fix for this design defect, but being the eternal optimist, I wanted to explore a way to do an interim fix that would not alter the OEM interior parts, just in case they ever did. So, with this in mind, I was able to take a 30" x 1.25" flexible foam based lattice molding that I had left over from another project (purchased at Lowes or Home Depot) , and while pushing down on the dash, I slid the molding over the protruding dash and slipped it under the lip of the front vent molding thus holding the dash back in it's original position. My next step will be to paint it the color of the dash (as close as I can get), but as you can see from the before and not after picture, it looks much better (at least to me :-). Someone could make a lot of money fabricating a 1.5" or 2" wide form fitted molding that would fit across the contour of the whole dash, similar to what I did (making it a more elegant solution).

I have the same problem on a 2003 Buick LeSabre. Nearing 200000 miles, and, yes the car does show some wear, but I believe the car looks pretty good for an 8 year old with 200k. This dash issue is becoming a concern, and I felt that it was due to the heat, especially this summer. Is there possibly an answer to this by "stretching" the dash back to original size? And does anyone else feel that the dash over the gauge area is sagging?

I have the same problem with my 2003 Buick LeSabre Custom Dash Top in Phoenix Az. I have seen so many of these exact issues on this vehicle. The Dash Top was not made of materials that could withstand excessive heat and cold, as magnified onto the Dashtop through the front Windshield. The Design and Contour are ok. It is the use of ttthe wrong material that is the problem. I covered mine with a DashMat.

Hi folks! All is not without hope! We have recently acquired two LeSabres. One is a 2001 and the other is a 2003. Both are Limited versions and the dash in the 2003 is beyond help. It has shrunk two inches from side to side, warped up in front of the passenger and the air bag there, and developed a wrinkle on top. No cracks like in the old days, just completely screwed up probably from age as well as sun and heat. Of all the systems and mechanicals that went into this car from 2000 to 2005, this is one of the worst examples of product quality and engineering I have ever seen, but don't give up. I'm getting quite a bit of help from my dealer as well as GM and I have also filed a complaint of safety concern with the NTSB, the National Transportation and Safety Board. It is essential that we each file this complaint with them, or no recall will ever occur. Go online and get the phone number for them and for Buick Customer service and get on the phone and make some waves. If you raise enough ruckus, you might just get some help, and then after you have it replaced, save those receipts so that when the NTSB does decide to force a recall, you will be reimbursed. It is important for us all to remember that you will catch more flys with honey than you will with poison. What I mean by that is to be very polite to all of the people you talk to in the course of these contacts and it will get you much further than using any other tactic. Remember, this is a safety issue concerning the airbag in front of the passenger. Any distortion in that area of the dashboard could be a real concern for Buick, the NTSB and your passengers. Focus on that with all your calls and visits to even the dealer of choice. It's one thing to do as many have done here on this site and complain, and quite another to take the necessary action you must take to help us all put pressure on GM as well as the NTSB. But will you? Good luck and let's all do our part to get them to force a recall and get our money back. Save those receipts!

I have a 2002 LeSabre with 227K miles on it. I don't have the dash problem. I noticed from the posts that most models that were listed were Customs. Do any of them have leather interiors? Could there be a difference in the material used? The other problems listed, window regulators and lights on the steering wheel and heater controls are present. By the way, my car is never garaged. I live in Wisconsin!

My mother's car is a 2000 Limited with leather interior and the dash pad has come loose above the instrument panel exactly like the picture of rick27607's car above. He car was parked in a garage or carport during its first 8 or so years and has been parked outside in north Alabama for the last 4 years and it was during this later period that the dash pad separated.

My father's car just experienced his dash popping up. I was shocked to see it as a common occurance. I was wondering if it would do any good to assemble a list of names and address of people who have had this problem and then send it to the manufacturer, NTSB, and possible a lawyer in order to facilitate GM actions. Please let me know if you would like to participate. email me at jdavis41@ma.rr.com or write me at 1128 South Park Drive, Fairmont, WV 26554. Let's hold GM accountable.

Same problem. I filed my complaint with The National Transportation Administration about a year ago, after exhausting every GM option. I've never gotten an acknowledgement from NHTSA. It's not difficult to file the complaint online but it seems like everyone who has the problem just wants to bitch and complain. Look up NHTSA an FILE A COMPLAINT !!!!

File your complaints at " safercar.gov ". This is a division of the National Highway Transportation Administration and after they receive enough formal complaints, they will open an investigation into the problem. As of today, 5/15/12,they have not received enough complaints to open an investigation. The complaint can be filed online or by calling 888-327-4236. Don't sit on your ass and wait for them to contact you. It won't happen.

My 2002 Buick dash coming up as well. Started about 1 year after I bought it. My wife bought a 2002 Nissan Altima as approximately the same time. Well here it is 10 years later and 111k miles later and my wife said," Honey this is just poor workmanship, My car isn't doing this". I had 3 window regulators go bad too. If GM wanted to maintain owner loyalty they would have recalled these problems. But of course that would cost money and of course they are not going too unless they are forced too. I recently bought a new vehicle and guess what? Shocker? It is definitely not a GM product. Goodbye GM.

I've just joined the club. My 2004 LaSabre Custom has buckled and separated from the chassis so much that there's only an inch before it becomes completely dislodged from the driver's side and about 6 inches from the passenger's. I filed a formal complaint online with the https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint and will call Buick tomorrow. Should there be a death due to neglect on GM's part before this will be classified "manufacturer's defect?"

I had the same problem with my 2004 LeSabre. I contacted GM and my local dealer. Basically the response was the same. It's a 9-year old car and you're going to have these types of problems. The dealer's solution was a new dash at a cost of $1,000 plus or an aftermarket dash cover (no thanks). I contact an auto upholstery shop and they said they could reupholster it but I'd have to pay a separate company to remove the windshield. Total cost would have been in the $600 range. I called a body shop owner I've dealt with before and he referred me to an auto upholsterer that he always refers his customers to. I took the car in and the owner said he could reupholster it for $300. He did not have to remove the windshield. He did the work in one day and it looks fantastic. It's padded like the original and matches extremely well. For an older car like mine, this is the approach I would recommend. I would not recommend spending a lot of time and energy with GM or the dealer, because you're are wasting your time.

Sign me up. My 2003 Buick LeSabre is doing the same thing. Been like this since May. Complaint filed. No luck yet. If I can find someone to do it for $300 like DonL1, I would get it repaired and move on. The car looks good, rides good, gets good gas mileage, but has a buckled dash. Embarrassing.

Rytiski, here's my suggestion. If you live in the Fort Lauderdale area contact John O at Auto Interiors by John O. The number is 954-785-4149. If you don't live in the area, you should find a highly recommended auto interior reupholstery company in your area. You can suggest that they call John O if they have any questions as to how to do the job. I had one local shop tell me the windshield had to be removed and reinstalled by a glass company. John O did the job without having to do that. I don't know how he did it but it looks great and he guarantees his work. He has been reupholstering cars in south Florida for over 26 years and is a real pro. Good luck on getting yours fixed.

I own a 2002 LeSabre Custom with the same peeling dash issue. I have been filing daily safety complaints with safercar.gov. I will be getting in touch with GM to file the official complaint with them as well. The only way there is a chance for a recall resolution, is for owners of these vehicles in mass to contact GM, & NHTSA (safercar.gov) & not just once, but several times to force a recall. Stress that this is A SAFETY ISSUE, because it is! I really like my LeSabre, because other than this dash issue, it has been, & I believe will be a good car for some time to come.

20

Yep me too! 2000 LeSabre with the same problems as mentioned above. Dash separating, window regulators malfunction (4x), fuel gauge issues. Very frustrating, I like the car a lot but hate the problems. Buick should have had a recall on all of these items.

I had issues with my dashboard before this happened. It seemed to be having a nervous breakdown. An extended warranty I purchased fixed one light -- the ABS light. The check engine light comes on periodically, but always goes off, and I get messages about my tire pressure and gas cap, both of which are always fine. Other than that I really like my LeSabre and agree that if I can get the dashboard fixed it will be a good car for quite some time.

We would be so smart for once if we would find a class action lawsuit against GM. That's the only way we will get this issue taken care off. Sadly enough, GM chased Dr Deming away when he attempted to teach them quality control, he was then hired by the Japanese automobile industry to do just that, the whole world is using ISO9000 QC control but GM thinks that are so good they do not need that. Let's teach them a lesson in financial responseability, and why did we bail them out is beyond me !

1 people found this helpful.

I would certainly support a class action suit if it just involved some of my time.

Hank k. Own a 2002 Buick LeSabre that has just developed the same problem of the dash board (Control Panel) shifting forward and separating the dash cover from the vent cover under the windshield, the cover is now warped and the separation is moving toward the passenger side. I am concerned not only about looks but also about safety and the airbags on both sides. I would gladly join in a class suit to have the problem rectified. Can't sell it the way it is, who in their right mind would buy a car seeing this problem, and I would never attempt to sell the car with its impending dangerous potential. It's a shame, the car rides beautifully, but because of this I would not ever again consider buying a GM product unless this situation is rectified. I will be stopping by a Buick dealership to see just what their take is on this issue, if not satisfied I will take the necessary steps to protest through the proper sources.

1 people found this helpful.
40

I work full time and do not have the time to research filing a class action suit, nor do I have money to spend, but I would gladly join a suit if one is established.

1 people found this helpful.
40

I also don't have money for it, but have some time to contribute towards keeping a class action suit moving (emailing/text messaging owners with the dashboard peeling problem). My '02 Lesabre is a great car but can't say how much this dash problem will definitely affect the value of the car when the time come to sell or O MY GOSH - trade it in. What a financial blood-bath that would be. Anyway count me in on a class action law suit if filed!

Same problem with my 2000 dash. Had several recalls, none for this problem. Also the window regulators have gone out, 3 within several months of the other. All the regulators have been replaced, the passenger regulator 2 times. Another problem with the light switch, it sticks on so i never use it since the lights come on automatic. I had several conversations with local dealers and they could care less. I did file a complaint with http://www.safercar.gov/Vehicle+Owners/

has anyone tried 3M super 77 spray to glue it back down? I'm thinking of trying this but don't want to screw anything up.

120

I used some 1 " wide metal strap about 5 pieces 4 to 5" long. Hold down a spot of the front edge of the vinyl and slide one of the metal strips under the front metal where the vinyl used to fit. I put 4 or 5 pieces spaced out along the distance of the raised vinyl. Then I covered it with a carpet style DASHMAT ( This is the brand name ). You can find them on the internet. They make them to fit almost all cars and pickup trucks. Good luck with yours. Daveydo

10

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm wanting to make sure I understand what I need to do. Is this a straight solid metal bar/sheet with one end that sits on top of the dash piece and the other end is wedged under the front metal to hold the dashboard down? then you'd cover up the metal parts that are showing with a dashmat right? Sounds pretty simple, although I don't know if I like the look of the dashmats from what I've seen so far. I have a limited lesabre with a leather interior/dash, and the carpet material doesn't look like it would blend well with the rest of the interior. Although I suppose it's better than nothing.

1 people found this helpful.
120

Yes, you have it right. However, you underestimate how nice the DASHMAT looks compared to the ugly dash cover coming up. Go on the internet and search for DASHMAT the brand name. They make them in many colors and they do look very nice. You will not be disappointed. Daveydo

I have a 2003 Buick LeSabre with the dash bubbling up and the seam pulling out of the driver's side defroster. It has lifted up 2 inches, completely separated from the metal mount underneath the foam dash. The bubble is spreading every week. Dealer says $900 to pull windshield and replace dash. Others say $200. I began researching solutions online and see SO many Buick owners with the same problem! It must be a defect/design flaw. I will probably try a repair myself, but with video record before/after and will register my complaint with GM, in case there is a class action or recall. Meanwhile, I am worried that the bubble will spread and the whole dash will pop, causing an airbag malfunction or endanger a passenger. And the vapor of the exposed GM glue makes me ill when the sun warms the dash. For repair ideas, I discovered the following important info: If the dash foam is made out of polyurethane, some automobile glues are not compatible. Some people have tried peeling back the vinyl, gluing and then bolting/screwing the foam back into place. Some have heated the foam to make it pliable and then glued/clamped (on a dash removed from car) it to reform the foam. Please post anything that has worked for you!

I am a 2001 Buick Lasabre owner that also has the bubble dash. Live in SC, bought the car new and car is under carport 60 percent of the time. Whenever I see one on the road I always check out dashboard and am under the impression that these dashboards are defective and GM should have replaced them. Have not filed a complaint with GM, but will today.

I have a 2004 Buick with the same problem, the dash has bowed up a couple inches on the driver's side and towards the passenger side also. After seeing all the comments with no solution I came up with a fix. I brought the rise back down with clips used to join sheets of plywood together, sliding one side of the clip under the grill in front of the dash and the other side holding the dash down (it works) Then I bought a dash cover and now all is well !!!

Add me to the long list of 2003 Buick Lesabre owners with buckled dashboards. I agree it is a poor design (should have been longer under the gill lip). When I first bought it after being a serial Ford owner I thought this is a well built car, "I'll buy a Buick next time again.". Now I'm having second thoughts. Ford never left me hanging like this. I'll probably look at a Lincoln for my next luxury car.

I have the same problem in a 2002 Buick LeSabre. It looks beautiful, except for the dash. If GM/Buick would fix the problem, I would consider another Buick. I guess Ford or Kia will get my business and my money.

Well, Well. I thought i was alone with this problem. I have a 2002 and yes the same problems. I am gonna register my complaint as well and try to fix it myself.

I have just noticed the same problem with a 2002 Le Sabre I bought new and was garaged 90 percent of the time. The separation is now about 20 inches long. I gave it to my son 3 years ago and just noticed it recently. Cliff

I had this problem with my 2004 Le Sabre. Took it to auto upholsterer in Pompano Beach, FL and for $200 he reupholstered the entire piece. Looks great almost like factory new. There was no reason to remove the windshield as some folks have suggested.

I have the same problem on my 2001 LeSabre....I received the car from my wife's aunt who was 97! it only has 22,000 miles on it. Interior is in like new condition, EXCEPT that dam buckled dash!! Im plan on picking up a Dashmat to make it look better...but its leather interior. The thread should stay alive. Feel free to contact me.

I have a 2000 Buick LeSabre Limited with 26,000 miles. Garaged nearly its entire live till last sumer when it set out side during building renovation. Noted dash separation this last winter when I removed dash pad yikes! what an ugly mess now I have joined the club of disgruntled Buick owners and now share in your pain. I too em concerned with airbag safety but have not found any record of airbag deployment caused by shrinking dash. I don't want to be the one to find out the hard way by loosing a friend or family member. I will register a formal complaint with GM and if an incident occurs you can bet a lawsuit against GM will follow not for $1K's but multiple $M's not a threat but a promise

Larry...let me get this straight. You're afraid to harm somebody right? But you're going to keep driving it anyways? And then if something else happens you'll blame somebody else? Wow you sound like a real class act...

350

The dash pad problem is documented and well known, but GM has decided to ignore it. I won't even start on the major flaws on almost all GM cars that have the passlock system, costing owners hundreds if not thousands to repair. Problems like this start at the top level. I crown GM the real class act here!

I have a 2003 mint condition with 27k.... garaged kept. Same dash separation problem .My. GM dealership said they have never seen this.Makes me sick. I have had Gm's all my life(37 years). This is the last straw. I have read the comments, I don't live in Florida where they seem to know how to fix it relatively inexpensive.I am not against fixing a car with a problem ,but come on.This is well known and documented. How come GM fixed paint issues on vehicles? That is not a SAFETY ISSUE compared to this.I talked to a Mechanic and he said that the dash cover material is thinner in the area of the air bag so it can deploy readily. SO a buckling dash won't affect anything ? Mike

For anyone with a Buick that has trouble with dash board cover popping up. I have found an easy and inexpensive way to fix this problem. If interested contact me at James.Johnson118@verizon.net .

I have the same problem and 2 friends also the dealer says $950 any suggestions email me at kec39@embarqmail.com

Simple fix: Punch several 3 inch finishing nails into the front of the dash cover. Then slide the other end of the nail into the metal slot. This will bring the cover down and improve visibility. This fix has little or no cost. A new cover is about $900. And Buick will do nothing. I am very happy with the way my cover now looks.

90

Wow, after reading all these complaints, I'm very disappointed to get to the end of this thread and find, that nowone has exuberantly claimed GM is gonna fix this problem or that there will be a recall. It makes me even more sure that my next new car purchase will be a Toyota. So add me to your group hoping to one day have GM standup for this defect and everyone thanks for alerting me to the fact that my bubbled dash may actually be unsafe due to it affecting the passenger airbag. Wow and with all these complaints being ignored on the heels of GMs ignition problems in the news I would think that they would want to get some positive press. And make things right. Here in Washington DC the ABC news station's "Seven On Your Side" can maybe get things moving on this when I forward this thread. Photos hopefully to follow.

This is not a safety issue. GM is not going to recall a 10 year old car because of a cosmetic issue. No car manufacturer would ever do that.

1 people found this helpful.
350

Your right, they won't recall a car that is 10 years old (lets call it a non safety issue, just so we agree on something). But the problem is, GM knew about this a LONG time ago! The model being discussed was last produced in 2005. Problems were occurring on models that were just two or three years old. Its a major flaw! A flaw you see every second your driving. They dragged their feet so they could say exactly what your saying now "its a cosmetic problem that is 10 years old". It worked for GM because no one died from it. It still doesn't make it right. GM tried dragging their feet with the ignition problems, but that came back to bit them in the ass. I think its ironic I called GM out on my last post four months ago, which happen to be about two weeks before the ax fell on this current mess they are dealing with (by FORCE!). I'm not impressed.

well my 2002 Lesabre dash just started lifting a few months ago and now it getting to the point I need to do something, Too bad GM won't take care of the American buyer. I found this web page when I searched how to replace the dash. If only a very small fraction find this page and then still a minor few comment it looks like this is a real and significant issue. Safety or not I agree the manufacturer knew early on and chose to do nothing. I will remember when buying my next car how GM is concerned about its American buyer and purchase accordingly. GM must stand for GOT MINE because once they get their money they don't care about you anymore.

To Chase...it's not a cosmetic issue that any of us are concerned with. Yes, it looks weird and causes a lot of staring and questions from people, but the buckling is now high enough in front of the steering wheel that it blocks my view just over the hood and cannot see the road. That is NOT cosmetic. Chase, do you own a GM 2002-2005 Buick LeSabre with this issue?

What an interesting thread. Yes, I am a Buick owner with the same concerns listed throughout. The concerns I have are that the Dealer Service Writers get away with lying to their customer base about the dashboard separation problem. If they are saying that to customers it can only be that they are new in the business or just transferred from sales to service and had a perfect dumbshit look to get by with answers they give out. The old GM is history so there won't be any accountability for these issues. The best anyone can hope for are solutions that actually fix the problem, like johnson118@verizon.net for example. Dash integrity, instrument lighting, and window regulators are very common problems on Buicks manufactured between 2000 and 2005. Yes, I am disgusted with these problems but when it comes down to it, I wouldn't trade my Buick. Great fuel economy and plenty of room. I have put over 500,000 miles on 3 Buicks since 2006. Since 2005, most of the Buick culprits have long since left the building. Now I just keep my eyes open for my next great vehicle in a few years. I don't think a six passenger sedan with great fuel economy and plenty of trunk space will be out there though, especially from Buick.

I thought I would post an update on my dash situation. Like most here, my dash popped up. Not just a crack, but WAY up! I tried to glue my dash pad down. It worked for a couple hours, then popped back up. I've had no luck finding anyone interested in doing it (professionally). So I was sitting in the car thinking of something I could do. I don't know how bad yours was popped up, but mine was raised about 4+ inches high and almost the whole length of the dash pad. Even a dash cover would look better, but with the dash pad popped so high, even that looked stupid. So I had an idea about using some type of wedge to keep the dash pad down. I went to the hardware store and looked around. I ended up buying a bag of 20 E-Z Shims made of hard plastic for $6. They are at most hardware stores and on eBay. They are eight inches in length, but you can custom snap them to the exact size you need. I snapped 18 into 1.75 inch lengths, and two about 1.5". I placed the wedges across the dash from the passenger side to the drivers side. You push the shim in the gap where the lip of the dash pad would slide in. No glue or adhesive at all. It worked!! I placed the dash cover over the dash and it looked WAY better. No bloated or popped up look. Since using the shims, I put 750+ miles on my car. I checked the shims today...and the shims never budged from where I put them. They are in there pretty snug because of then way they fit in the opening for the lip of dash pad and they lean on the curve of the dash pad lip. And because I used so many, there isn't much pressure on each one. Its spread over the whole dash. I'm not planning on gluing them in place, but if a person did, they would absolutely never move. I'm including photos. A couple showing the car before, the shims, then with the plastic shims put on, then the cover over the dash pad. With the dash cover in place, you can't see any wedges, not even close. This fix is geared towards the person with a severely popped dash. Shims $6, dash pad cover was $23. I wish I could have glued it on and not had to use the cover, but this looks 100 times better then before!

I started on the passenger side and worked to the drivers side. Would be perfect with a couple more shims, but its fine as is.

Last photo. Much better appearance. Again, this is for people with dash pads that are popped up a couple inches or more. Cheap and safe fix. No glue or screwing anything in. If your dash looks like mine did, I'll bet it works for you. Good luck!

Good post rallye_red! But Buick is still dumb not to spend a few million dollars (at most) to maintain a good reputation and satisfy its loyal customer base. Do you think that it would be possible to make the shims not as long so that once pushed in, they would not be visible if the fat ends that face the passenger compartment were painted black so they would blend with the black dash pad?

350

Thanks...I agree GM just swept this problem under the rug. I hope a few people can use the information I posted to help them make the dash look better and much more presentable. As for your question, I don't think the shims will hold the dash in. The shims come 8 inches long. First, the shims starts out very thin and gradually get thicker to 1/4 inch at the far end. But the reason I don't think it would work (at least in my case) is not only are you trying to keep the dash pad down, but you will also be trying to keep it from pulling out.The dash pad lip on my car is not pushed under. When my dash pad originally popped up, it changed the dash pad, its slightly warped like. Mine has a small crease in the middle on top that runs side to side. It will never be able to look 100% correct. You could cut the shims down a bit, but I left them as is. The longer they are, the stronger they are= better leverage and less pressure on each shim. Good luck either way! Don't forget you can get a dash pad cover made of suede and other materials that look better then the carpet like cover. Brian

90

Hey All I installed shims today. I am happy it worked but the true test will be if it holds up to Father Time. It looks better but there's still a one inch gap with all the black shims visible on my beige dash. My concern is the shims closest to the driver mirror aren't real tight and they may fall back behind the dash I I don't add some glue. I may replace them with wider shims in this area. Several weeks ago I removed the dash cover piece from a LeSabre at the junk yard. $20 I think + gas and sweat. It was a pain and required a lot more force than I want to put into removing/replacing mine. So I might never replace it. My car needs a bunch of maintenance since I have done virtually nothing to it. It has 154k. I'll try and show you all some pics soon. FuglyDash Mike

350

FuglyDash, the car looks better I'm sure. You could always paint the shims to match with your dash color. But the shims really work well when you use a dash cover. Its so much better then that bloated look. By the way, on my dash pad the drivers end near the mirror is like yours, the shims aren't exactly super snug like the rest of the dash. Its been over a month and 1500 miles since installing the shims on my car, and they are still in the same position as I put them. I haven't needed to adjust them at all. The shims are just another option for people, and they work great if your on a budget. Every time I see another Lesabre with a bloated dash, it just reminds me how bad mine looked! Those wheels really look good on your Buick, I never would have thought of adding aftermarkets. Its looks like a totally different car, not a "granny grocery getter" like mine LOL.

Hello Gentlemen, recently I purchased a mint 2003 Buick Lesabre(27k miles) with the same dash problem of it peeling back and bowing. After doing some research (7 months worth), I too found that nobody wanted to touch it. I decided to replace the original pad with one that was good from a junk yard and to secure it so it won't happen again The outcome is like "new "now. I want to keep the car a long time so, it was worth it to me. I am sure there are many fixes out there, so do what you feel is easiest for you. I made a video and have pics trying to explain the anatomy of this dash with removal and installation, but I have to find somone who knows how to load and edit to Youtube for me. I will post the link when I get it done. Don't worry folks, the air bag won't deploy because of this. It's a cosmetic issue with the pad being wrapped around a plastic subase and the glue drying out. It's TOOOOOO bad the auto manufacturer couldn't help and come up with a fix. My total cost was about $30 - 35. and some labor of my own. Good luck with some of the ideas that have been mentioned. I believe that as Buick owners we are all just trying to solve a problem that should have never happened. I will post it A.S.A.P.

I don't know how I missed the last post, but winkylink, your dash looks great! If you ever post stuff on youtube, please post it here. The anatomy photos/video would be huge! There is absolutely nothing out there that I found. Speaking for myself, I did not want to start a removal/installation project that I wasn't sure I could finish correctly. The pics/video would help big time for people. My shims are holding up well, they haven't budged. Like you said, we are all in this together trying to find what works. Again, your dash looks great!!

Gentlemen, I have a 3 part video on "how to replace and install the 2000-2005 Buick Lesabre dash pad" as promised. It's not perfect because I had one chance to do it. I have the same issue with a 2001 Buick LeSabre; Just bought the car, saw the issue, thought it would be no big deal and then saw all these posts and then wondered what have I gotten into; researching options to fix. I am thinking of getting defective dash itself replaced, then put a cover over that, as well as using a reflective dashboard protector/sunshield--the kind that folds open and can be used when in the hot sun. As I look at these dashboard covers, does anyone know what it means by 'with heads up display' and 'without heads up display' ?

40

A head-up display is a display that places information in or just outside the driver’s line of sight, above the plane of the dashboard. While a head-up display can take almost any form, the most common and compelling type reflects its image directly off the car’s windshield just below the driver’s line of sight. This is achieved by means of a display on the top of the dashboard and a specially coated windshield. The digital image could be MPH, RPM, Temp., etc.

295

Buick Dood, if you think you might want to replace the dash pad, take a look at the 3 youtube videos that I made on this subject. "Buick Lesabre 2003 dash removal and replace" Part 1, 2 and 3. Might help your decision making. Winkylink.

WinkyLink, thanks I will be looking at them. I went to an auto upholstery place and discussed the issue and one of the business owners said she has heard of this problem and not only with LeSabre. They should be able to fix by removing the windshield then reinstalling after done. Do not know the cost yet.

40

Buick Dood, if you are considering a dash job on your Buick, you need to follow WinkyLink's advice on his YouTube videos before you do anything whether by yourself or hiring it out. I followed his advice before replacing my dash and am super thankful to him.

I too will voice my discontentment with GM, specifically the Buick division. I am not going to waste my time calling some operator. I only hope somehow someone there peeks at this site or this issue from time to time and has to conclude there is shoddy workmanship, more so in the design of the way this dashboard is installed. I do not hold line workers responsible as they are told what to do and follow a process repetitively, I am sure. It does draw some concerns about GM as a whole. I happen to own a 99 Park Avenue, which I would like to sell and a 2010 LaCrosse. Neither of these cars have any resemblance of this dash problem. I don't know what went wrong with the LeSabre earlier last decade but it certainly cannot be the blame of heat or the operators of these cars. I hold the GM and the Buick division solely responsible for this less than adequate design of installation. Shame on them.

I just bought a 2003 LeSabre Custom a month ago. It was in great condition with low mileage. I did notice the separation in the dash before I bought it, but assumed it would be a minor repair. It wasn't until after the purchase and started researching the issue that I discovered how widespread the problem is. Based on what I've read, I'm sure GM is well aware of the problem given the huge number of complaints, but unless it can be proved that it's a definitive safety issue, and the government takes action, GM will continue to ignore it. I also filed a complaint to add to the growing list. WinkyLink's video is very informative and hopefully will help me to get this problem corrected.

I have a 2001 Buick it did the same thing can't find anyone to fix it. I not have 50.000 miles.

Are you handy with tools or mechanical situations? If so, look at the 2003 Buick Lesabre dash removal video's part 1 ,2 and 3. It is posted here on the forum and youtube. Winkylink.

I have a 2003, low mileage, Buick Lesabre that my father in law bought new. He kept parked in tree shade, but since 2006 I have had under a car shed. Only noticed the dash pad buckling up a year or so ago. Anyone had any luck with the covering from Auto xxwhatever I read several posts back? It was the cover believe called.

350

I'm posting over two and a half years after installing the shims and dash carpet pad on my car. The shims have held up perfectly. I've never had to adjust them or the carpet dash pad. Most of these cars are just daily transportation, and the fix was under $30, took about 15 minutes, no tools needed, and has stood the test of time. Those who want to replace the pad, have the mechanical knowledge and desire, the videos are there to help you along the way, if you choose to replace the dash pad (I think winkylink posted those videos). Whatever works best for your needs.
