will a engine for sure start on starting fluid?

Asked by LeeW99 Feb 01, 2023 at 05:47 PM about the 2005 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 liter quit running on the freeway. Engine lost
power, running rough. pulled to the side. engine quit.Towed it home. Started
it. Ran very rough and then quit. Will not start now. Code reader shows no
codes. Replaced camshaft position sensor. Last year replaced spark plugs
and coils. Last year replaced fuel pump. I checked and have 5 volts at the
camshaft position sensor. I pulled a spark plug and verified spark. I sprayed
starting fluid in the throttle body and will not start. Truck was quite low on oil
at the time of stoppage but still turns over (not seized). Would the truck start
for sure on starting fluid or lack of fuel still possibly the issue? Truck did ran
very low on gas and the possibility exists that it may have sucked sediment

If it won't even attempt to run on starter fluid then one can assume the timing is way off. Run a compression test.

Sounds like the truck is treating you the way you treat it .

If you know you have spark but it won't run on the starting fluid it's either flooded with too much gasoline or you have no compression because the timing chain or belt has jumped. Hold the accelerator pedal to the floor while cranking the engine. This will put the computer in clear flood mode. If it still won't run do a compression test. If all cylinders test very low or zero it's jumped timing. Hope that helps! Jim
