Asked by Keri Apr 27, 2017 at 10:21 PM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When starting the truck we've noticed a hard grinding
sound. Truck will not start obviously. Have tried changing
the starter as well as the battery.

Sounds like the ring gear on the flex plate, or flywheel is shot. Take the inspection pan down if it has one, or take the starter out and check the ring gear that the starter drive messes into when starting.

Two words: starter shims usually not needed , but I cannot think of anything else that would help to remedy this problem (unless you want to buy another starter. :) yeah try shims , you'll probably be able to see marks where the teeth are misaligned .

Flywheel Is the answer you’re looking for for that you will have to take it to a mechanic so they can separate the transmission and the engine and replace the flying will the parts cost not that much but the job is expensive depending who does the job and how good the person is good luck
