i have towed a 10,000 pound boat with my truck but it was all it wanted to do to pull it down the interstate it stayed in third gear and every hill i hit it geared down to second would not recomend this for repeated towing or long hall i only got six MPG's while doing this

depends is it automatic or manual? you should be fine though, i had a 96 ECSB 5.9V8 4x4 auto, and i towed way more that 10,000lbs with it more than once

depends alot on the gear you have. I drove an 18 wheeler for yrs. I drove 2 trucks identicly set up the only differance was the gearing one would pull very well the other I was a down shifting workaholic going up hill. What I did learn from yrs. of towing is don't force it. If you loose speed because of the weight don't try to force it to go faster you will just over heat the engine. You may loose some speed going up hill but again don't force it do what the truck will do you will get there.

What a truck will pull will alway exceed what it can safely stop. That's the real number behind towing capacity.

i towed two hay wagons with mine which was a total of 35,000 pounds but i would not recommend you do that unless the truck you have is used as a beater truck

Your safe towing anything between 3200/5600 pounds. I'm gonna buy a camper trailer that weighs 4250 , so therefore I'll be ok, and I have the exact same truck.

@John: Thank you for pointing out what everyone misses. The towing capacity for these are around 7.9k-8k lbs. That means they can pull it and safely stop it. Pull more and you put excessive wear on the transmission, tires, brakes, engine, etc. in addition to the increased chance of rear- ending someone because it pushes you when trying to stop. Throw into the mix the fact that many states require additional license requirements for anything 10,001# & up. Our horse trailer is near 14.5-15k fully loaded and we had to get a Class E Georgia non- commercial license to technically be legal while pulling it. But we use a 3500 dually which tops off at 22.5k#. Play it safe and always buy the truck needed for the trailer, not the other way around. Or just rent something for the one time you need it.

no one is asking about tongue weight or hitch weight... thats a number that will get you in trouble with the law. so be mindful

Good Lord!!! Here, let's keep this simple. This is for factory stock, no modifications, manufacturer recommended pull weights so you can go, stop, not burn the crap out of your breaks or burn up your motor.... Ram 1500 4x2 Regular Cab 5.9-liter Magnum V8.........7,950 lbs Ram 1500 4x2 Club Cab®/Quad Cab 5.2-liter Magnum V8......7,650/7,550 ;lbs Ram 1500 4x2 Quad Cab 5.9-liter Magnum V8.......7,500 lbs There it is, plain and simple. Without the stories of the 18 wheeler or 4x4 or my truck is weighted for pulling 7000 lbs but I'm a complete idiot and don't care that it's not safe....I'm gunna pull me 10,000 === lbs!!! I am much man!

The 2003 ram 1500 Quad cab has 3 different towing rates..one with 355 gears can tow 7350lbs , the other 2 have 392 gears, but the one with 245/70/17 tire/wheel combo can tow 8600lbs while the ram with 20in wheels can only tow 7300lbs...the above commets are some what correct but misleading

Take you gvwr subtract it from your gcvwr and the you get your maximum towing capacity weight but it does depend on your gear ratio I have the 1999 dodge ram 1500 5.2 magnum 3.55 6400 gvwr 12500 gcvwr so subtract gvwr my no.is 6100 bls trailer my trailer ony weight gvwr 3652 bls tw 375 so I'm well under my gcvwr with a weight distribution hitch you are able to tow no more 8000 bls tw 800
