Don't have experience with this problem on your truck so I can't give you good advice... About all I can say is make sure your linkage is adjusted properly. Other than that, take it to a trusted mechanic...

its just strange this just happened out of the blue
ur overdrive may b turned off
dodgeram1500 answered 16 years ago
my o/d switch is on my shifter to turn it on and off when its off u hit the switch and a light comes on in the dash by the gauges
Will it shift out of first gear (25 MPH ish) if not try replacing the speed sensor on the rear axle. I had a 1998 Dakota that was not shifting out of first gear and that was the problem.
dodgeram1500 answered 16 years ago
yes 1st is good sometimes it gets stuck on 3rd and the rpms just skyrocket when it dont wanna shift but when i punch it to pick up speed it stays locked it that low gear
dodgeram1500 answered 16 years ago
also i thought the speed sensor was for ABS problems
dodgeram1500 answered 16 years ago
well just took it in today to try and replace the fluid and change the tranny filter to see if that does the trick
sounds like you need play with the gas peddle when it gets up there give it gas reall fast or let off a tiny bit and see if shell shift if not add some trany fluid or buy a chevy lolbut my dakota will do that some time and if you just play with the gas a little bit that might work
I must have all ben had by doge I have the same problems and can not find a fix for it help clair7663@yahoo.com any advise or help would be app
I had the same problem with an 01 Dodge Ram 1500. There are two senors located in the transmission that will need to be replace. You will need to drain your transmission and drop the pan. on the right side of the transmission you will see two sensors, speed sensor $47.18 and governor control solenoid $89.95. Replace both of them. replace your pan gasket and fluid and you are ready to roll.
I have a 2001 ram 1500 when I gas on it while rolling around 60 it feels like it slips out of gear and my rpms sky rocket. Eney idea on what that might be
Roy, on your problem with the transmission. It sounds to me like you are having band problems. If you can get to 60 with it shifting through all the gears, then your shift bands are slipping.
i have a 2000 dodge ram 4x4 auto trans. from a stop i start out and it wont shift out of low i have to gas on it then back off it for it to shift then its fine any clue as to whats wrong
I got a question. Does anyone have any idea why my truck wont go over 65? It shifts fine rides good. But it dont go over 60. Its about to go into the shop but I wanted to see if I could tinker with it a little. Anyone got som4 ideas or had this problem?
I have the same problem and we replaced all sensors and tranny fluid and it still didn't fix the problem...........any other suggestions?
My 98 is doing the same thing with only 80,000 original miles. I chanel out the rear speed sensor, pressure sensor, pressure selenoid, fluid, and filter. Still doing it. I went to my buddy, he rebuilds them. He said drop the valve body and change out the overdrive relay. Also check connectors for fluid. Fluid in a connector will screw the ohms up as well as checking the external conector on the speed sensor. Should fix it like new. Provided there's no major build up in the pan.
I have a problem I have a 99 dodge ram that 1st gear doesn't shift till 25 and when I slam it at 40 or above it just red lines and wont move till I let go of the gas then it get the gear again and when I slam it at 30 it doesn't shift I just red lines any ideas wat It would be ?
i have a 97 ram 1500, just changed all the sensors in the tranny, checked the wiring harness, at first after changing the parts it would shift, now it wont take any drive gears or the reverse gear, it just acts like it is in neutral the whole time.
Torque convert clutch solinoid my 2000 ram 2500 did the same thing a transmission shop changed them and it fix my problem
Sounds like everybody needs torque converter clutch solinoids
U have to pull off the valve body to change them so be careful or take it to a shop
When my 2001 1500 did it, I ran transmission fluid to kinda filter out the tranny, when I got her back not a problem since

my 2013 dodge ram is stuck to 4th gear as it indicates in the dashboard, engine warning lit also. any helper tips on what to do?
I had this problem, and before the weekend came for me to work on it, the transmission has "locked up" I suppose. It's like its stuck in park. The shifter on the column will move to R freely, have resistance in N, I can force it through N to D, then D, 2, and 1 move freely. When the truck is in neutral it will not roll. The drive shaft doesn't turn. It's locked in place. I dropped the pan and changed the dual solenoid, (the one with the wire going to the top of the accumulator, as well as the governor solenoid. Please help. I am without a vehicle...
Dodgeram2013 your problem can be figured out by taking it to an auto parts store like autozone to figure out the engine code. The transmission can send a trouble code to the pcm and make the engine light come on. More than likely, its a sensor in the transmission. My truck sticks in 3rd gear a little and now I have a point of reference to start. I bet my issue with my 98 ram 4x4 is the speed sensor in my differential because my brake lights are on and my speedometer is slightly off. I will change the sensor and service the transmission next weekend.
I'm having the same problem. My 99 ram won't go over 65mph i got the code p0305 and i changed everything and nothing happened. I removed the sensor it has on top of the catalytic converter and it shifted fine. I think the car might be bad so ill replace it.
P0305 is a misfire code for cylinder 5. I have a 98 Ram 4x4 and I love my truck so much, Id replace the engine and transmission before I would ever replace the truck. Mine had a problem sticking in 3rd gear until I let off the gas. 2 sensors, new fluid, filter, 2 beers, and 1 hour of work, shifts great now.
What sensors did you replace? I took off the sensor on top of the cat and it shifted fine. I put it back on because it was getting too hot under the truck and now that i have it back on it doesn't shift over 65/70mph
My problem was completely different from yours. My code was p1757. I replaced the governor solenoid and the pressure switch located inside the transmission pan. Did you replace the sensor you removed? That could be the problem. Try that first, if it doesnt work replace the cat.
I'll be trying that today. I'm gonna go buy the oxygen sensor and replace it, see if that's the problem. If not I'll change the cat. It's weird tho that i unplug the oxygen sensor and it shifts fine. A "mechanic" told me it was a bad cat which is why i kept thinking about replacing it but thanks for the help. I'll update as soon as i replace it.
Did you unplug the sensor when you took it out? If so, try leaving the sensor in and just unplug it. If that does not help, it would be the cat. If it does, maybe its just the sensor. Yes, please update it. Im curious to your issue.
No sir i just unscrewed the sensor and left it plugged on the top part. I'll just unplug the connectors and see if it makes a difference. Im really hoping it's the oxygen sensor and not the cat :/
How much is the sensor?
45-55$depending on the brand. So i unplugged the connector part only, drove it and it still does the sane thing.
Since its less than 100 bucks, Id just replace the sensor. You are going to replace it with a new cat anyways. If you need to save $$ for the cat, take the sensor to a hardware store and match the threads with a bolt and plug the hole. Lol shade tree, but it should help. If you plug the hole and it continues to do it then you will know for a fact that it is the cat.
96 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie SLT with 5.9 started to not shift right into higher gears. Took it to the shop, they flushed the tranny and put in new oil. It shifted fine for about 6 months, then started it again! Neighbor told me about a product called PROLONG for transmissions. I put it in and have had 160,000 miles trouble free..not one mis shift!!!
Coronet_608 answered 7 years ago
i had the same problem and it turned out to be the catalytic converter and something with fuel injection

I had a 1999 Dodge ram that won't shift higher that 3rd gear. Had 3 machanic look at, all 3 have different solutions. I found that there is a transmission control relay in fuse box. Switch with a/c relay, no more shift problem
1999 dodge ram 1500 4x4 5.9 l, shifts hard from 1 to 2 and sometimes seems to down shift and rev real high ,then seems fine top end runs out well any ideas?
If you haven't changed the fluid and screen yet, try that. If you have, try an additive like Lucas no slip for transmissions. I add that to my transmission, and on my wife's jeep. Works great for us.
I have a 1996 B2500 that has about 20,000 on rebuilt trans. It has decided not to shift out of first gear and the speedometer won't work. It did this while driving once and fixed itself. But when it happens the speedometer stops working, and ideas?
Mini_1415056 answered 7 years ago
Have same issue and anther new one , trans wouldn't shift up through 2 and 3 and more gas you gave it it would just rev, on a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 V8 5.9 magnum 4x4 and do I dropped pan check seleionds ( ok) pulled valve body and parts came down , the band fork came off . So put things back together. When putting on shifting linkage found out when starting truck my shifter is off by the gauges . Park reeds reverse, reverse reeds drive , why and how to fix?
i have a 1994 dodge ram 1500 5.9l 360 it will go in gear but dont have reverse neutral or park what can calls that

I have a 2002 dodge ram 1500 5.9 it would take forever to switch gears and my uncle changed out he transmission fluid new filter everything to do that. Worked great for a week or so then started up again. He did another transmission fluid change new filter everything. And now its been 2 days and its starting again. He said the owners before never changed out the transmission fluid before that's why its coming out black. A few more transmission fluid changes and it should be good. But I wanna know if it could be something else. The engine light is on but last month when I took it it the power control module. Also the break light and the ABS light are on.
My 1996 Ram didn't want to shift gears, and I had the fluid replaced twice along with the filter. IN a short time problem returned. Put in a product called Prolong and it has been problem free for 180,000 miles!!! When my brake light and ABS were both on at the same time, I found the vacuum hose under my battery had broken and it had a vacuum leak. That controls your cruise control...which mine quit when that happened.
02 ram 1500, 5.9 gas pot. Some times I start it up and when I put it in gear it will take off fine but go down the street and stop and it's tries to take off in high gear. Then go down to next light and stop, the same thing will take off fine. I talked to a buddy about it and his did the same thing. So he says to put it in hurtful and switch the 4x4 switch from hi to low and make sure it is going into 4 wheel, do that about 5 or 6 times and it will start Shifting regular. But mine keeps falling back.
That's supposed to read neutral not hurtful don't know how that got there.
Have a Dodge Ram 1500 I changed the pack block whatever it's called and it still won't shift to first and second gear
Did you change your transmission fluid
What would cause my 05 Dodge Ram 1500 to shift good out of first second and third it hesitates high RPMs change the shift solenoid change the speed sensors change the fluid filters what could it be
I have a 08' dodge 1500 4*4 why is it my overdrive kicks out all the time
I have a 2004 Ram 5.7 4x4. After I got it, it would slip from drive into 3rd gear while driving down the highway, or at least I think it is in 3rd. I could manually down shift to 2rd of low, but when in drive it would stay in 3rd unless I turned it off. When I restarted everything would be fine for about 300 miles and do it again. Now it is starting to do in almost everyday. Anyone have thoughts?
I got 2001 blow tranny line now it will not shifted right with new lines and radiator
Dan my 2003 is doing the same thing ... what was wrong with yours???
I first tried replacing fluid and filter, no luck. Then replaced shift silinoid, still no luck. Replacing computer module did the trick.
Thank you soooo much!!! Replacing it tomorrow!!!
Good luck. I think the 2003 and 2004 are a bit different. The TCM is part of the Main computer module in 2004, in 2003 it is separate. But I think it is likely your problem too.
I bought mine used on Ebay for about $100
Well Dan just wanted to give you my update .... so how about it’s a bad/clogged Cat.Con. ... Hopped on the interstate this morning headed to the mechanic. Got off on the exit and my check gauge light dinged I looked and my battery hand read low and my temp gauge read that it was getting close to running hot... so mechanic unplugged O2 sensor from the transmission and banged on the Cat some cause he said transmission was perfect and so was my TCM .... he said pretty sure it’s a bad Cat! So I hopped back on the interstate headed to work and started having vibration real bad ...kinda like I had bad tires but shifting perfect and smooth! So I called him with what it was doing now he said MOST DEFINITELY a bad Cat cause it can’t breathe!
I assumed you were having the same symptoms as I was since you were asking me was fixed mine. I'm glad someone was able to help identify you issue
You have a clutch adjustment bolt on the side of the tranny on the linkage side. Its somewhat tough to get to if you can identify. Back off the retainer nut and screw the adjustment bolt all the way in and then put, I believe, 90 pounds of torque on it. Then back out the bolt one and three quarters turn and lock down the retainer nut. Should do the trick. Also wiring harness is the front wheel well will get caked up with road gunk. Try seperating and cleaning the connections.
2013 ram 1500 will go about 10 feet then nothing. first time it happened it sounded like the drive line dropped. I can clear the code with the key 3 times then start it. put it in drive, goes 10 feet or so then no drive and high rev. no first gear but can drive in reverse no problem.engine code that came up was 7 injector. tran code came up as the solenoid problem. we are to the point where the pan is dropped, valve body is out and found some metal shavings. at a stop right now and need more help!
devinrogers86 answered 6 years ago
Too many responses for me to go through all of them, so some of my information may be repeated. My truck was sitting for a year until I had the time to put into it. Trans froze driving home. It would crank and run normally for about 3 miles, then slow itself down to a complete stop, and would not accelerate at all. Turned it off for 15 mins to cool down and it would go another 3-5 miles. Had to get it towed. Trans fluid depleted completely. Obviously, this was an overheating issue and possibly other symptoms. When I began working on it, I noticed first that the rear differential speed sensor was shot. Replaced that and speedometer worked again, along with turning off abs and brake light. Was now shifting out of first and second, but roughly. Dropped the pan, pulled the valve body and replaced all solenoids/wiring harness. This helped but didn't fix the issue completely. Seemed like the torque converter wasn't getting pressure during first few seconds of cold crank. After a few seconds, it would roll forward on it's own in drive (like it should). Still shifting like crap. I replaced the check valve/pump line to the converter. Didn't help at all. I was able to drive it for a full hour at that point before O/D would kick off and trans temp light would illuminate. I replaced the trans speed output sensor, checked/adjusted the linkage and nothing was helping. I did not feel or see any issues at 60-65, so I left the bands alone. At that point, I bought a certified, re-manufactured valve body. Swapped it out and haven't seen/felt an issue since then. This, among several others, is a common issue with these trucks from that year/model range. The valve body can become packed with shavings and coagulated fluid if you don't keep up with your filter/fluid change schedule. My truck is a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L V8 RWD, extended cab, 46RE Trans. and 8 ft bed. The trans was re-built around 8 years ago from a factory recall. If you've exhausted all efforts and went as far as I did, then you'll need to take your truck to a transmission specialist and have the torque converter/clutch tested. Usually, it's the TCC itself at that point. Hopefully, I've chimed in on some new information for everyone and helped out.
Governor pressure sensor, governor pressure solenoid, fluid flush/ filter do band adjustment should have the exact specs in Haynes/Chilton manual
Try your shift sensor in the tranny pan
Go to a shop tell them you need to check your transmission computer for faults using a OBD11 tester. It is more than likely you have a shift solenoid bad. If transmission is not shifting and giving you a service engine light it is probably the solenoid itself in the transmission. If it is shifting erratically or not shifting at all and there is NO Check engine light coming on; then the problem is probably one of the speed sensors on the engine which tells the different speed solenoid to shift. Hope this helps
I have a 94 dodge ram 2 wheel drive rebuilt trany drives good in 1st and revers but will not shift out of 1st. What would be the problem
Gooddog123 answered 5 years ago
For all of the above. Try and get it diagnosed first, with a code reader. Because there are about ten different things, that can apparently cause this. I am also working my way through this. I have, so far, replaced the input and output, shift sensors with no luck. I'm going to use a code reader tomorrow, and see what's next.
I had a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the auto trans. It had the exact same problem. Took it to a very well known local transmission mechanic and once he tore it apart he called me in and showed me that all the gears were fried. Said what causes this issue on these trucks is that the trans cooler isn’t big enough. And the trans fries itself. Replaced with rebuild kit and a better torque converter and a bigger trans cooler. And she ran great ended up throwing another 150hp to it with various mods and she still held up
My is doing the same thing and i want to know what to do .
not an answer but... my dodge ram 1500 2wd 5.2 will intermittently not shift out of 1st... maybe 1 in 10 times..... i can carefully shift to neutral and back to drive and it will then shift. replaced fluid, filter, gov solenoid, gov pressure sensor, speed sensor and adjusted bands...so intermittent.... other ideas or send to shop... just feel like it is something simple......
Guru6kq1r my 99 is doing exactly that and I was going to have exactly what you had done done to mine did it work are there other things I should do as well?
I just bought a non running 2001 ram that was sitting in storage for a couple years. With 115k miles on it..it needed a fuel pump. I replaced that. Truck started right up. But won't shift into any gears.. won't shift out of first.. I noticed this plug the wires were just hanging. So I connected them.. one wires green ones blue. They were completely out of the plug. But they could be reversed I don't really know how it was before. Anyone know? The truck still doesn't shift.. so I reversed the wires.. still no luck. Anyone have any ideas. I'm about to drop the pan and change the gov/noid but I don't think that's the issue
Hello all! I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 Conversion Van. It only has 69,510 miles on it. I bought it with about 58000 miles on it back in December. I know it’s original miles and everything as I bought it off my wife’s aunt and uncle. It sat for about a year. I bought a new battery, starter and I did a full tune up on it, from hoses and all fluids to spark plugs and everything in between. Anywho, I had a similar problem the van would shift into second pretty late and run really high on RPMs. It wouldn’t shift out of first gear until I was over 35 MPH. I swapped out the oil pressure sender and the speed sensor on the rear axle. Then changed the oil again. Everything ran fine and was shifting out of first gear between 20-25 mph. Now about 2 months later and 1200 miles later it’s happening again. And now when I’m in the highway it drives really hard between 60 and 65 mph, once I’m going faster than 65 it runs smooth again. Anyone have any idea?!?! I absolutely love this van and converted it to my work van (I’m a plumber) so I don’t wanna mess it up. Thanks in advance everyone!!!
Bought a '98 Ram 1500 5.9L 2WD. Shifts into 2nd at 10mph then acts like it wants to shift at 15mph, slips a little. Then shifts smooth after thay. Any ideas?
I have a 2001 dodge 1500 gas, whenever I go from a complete stop and start driving it revs up to 3 thousand rpm’s before it really starts moving and won’t really shift till almost 4 thousand rpm’s in first gear and then whenever I do give it gas it redlines and bounces until I let off the gas to make it shift in 2rd gear! It sounds like it’s slipping a lot idk what to do looks for help on a answer on what to do?
ave a 01 Dodge Ram 1500 2wd.. have to get truck to about 3000 rpm and let off gas for it to shift but as soon as it shift and get back on the gas it’s like it never shifted but I can feel the truck shift and watch rpm drop like it shifted. Tried resetting computer but no help. I can’t even manually shift it and if I go to Neutral then back to drive it shifts then starts sputtering until I let off gas and let it come back to first. Fluid and everything is in good shape. Ordered a Governor Pressure Solenoid hoping that will work but was wondering if anyone could help and has any ideas what it go actually be??
