1998 5.9 2WD Ram won't go into first gear. Takes off in second gear

Asked by Kingpin1234 Mar 03, 2010 at 12:06 AM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

No first gear.  Manual shifting won't engage first gear either.  Gas gage quit working and engine sometimes won't start like it is flooded and sometimes it runs real rough for a while cold.  All these symptoms started at the same time it seems.

check your fuse pannel mine was starting to start hard and run kinda like crap. i put new cap, rotor, wires, plugs, new fuel pump, distributer, air filter, and lots of TIME and no change. lol then i pulled and checked all my fuses and they had white corriosion on some of them. i put a whole round of new ones and it cured mine. I forgot what my grand pa always toldme... to always start with the simplest.
