did I break the transmission or transfer case

Asked by Eric1998dodgeram1500... Dec 03, 2016 at 09:45 PM about the 1998 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I took my truck out mudding and got it majorly
stuck had to have 2 full size trucks to pull me out
train style. It seamed stuck in 4wd but now I hear
grinding how can I know if it's the transmission or
the transfer case or both. Is there a way to know
for a fact before ordering a part. Any tests i can do
to know what part

If it can be put up on a rack and run you could listen for noise and trace it down. It could also be a differential.

Check the fluids at the transfer case, differentials and transmission for proper level and condition. If you find very low fluid levels or metal shavings in the fluid you may have found the problem.
