differential and 4x4 problem
i've replace the rear axle on my '97 dodge ram pickup, just internal parts,differential case,ring gear,etc,using same housing,the one i've take off was 9 1/4 and i've get the parts from an dodge ram sport,that mean smaller gear,everything fits right,and work perfect but,when i have set the 4x4 it feels to thigth like forced, is this because the differential case and pinion are smaller than the one i've take off??
Did you make sure the gear ratio's were the same between the two trucks? if they are different and you lock 4x4 in on dry ground you could have some serious breakage in the driveline. There should have been a small metal tag on the differential cover of each truck this tag will tell you the gear ratio. If they don't match DO NOT USE 4x4.
sounds like you have an alignment or a gearing issue, most 2nd gen rams came with 3.75:1 rear ends, sports how ever had either that or a 4.10:1 rear end id start at the gearing. put the truck in neutral and turn the rear drive shaft, take note of how many times the shaft spins per 1 rotation of the tire, do the same with the front drive shaft, if you get two different numbers then the gearing is your issue. to check gear alignment, mark off about 4-8 gear teeth on your ring gear and turn every thing you should see the pinion gear meshing almost in the middle, if not your going to need to either add shivs to the pinion shaft or remove them if the pinion teeth are trying to overshoot the ring gear teeth
I'm asking how I see what my ratio is on my 2nd gen it's a sport 97 4x4 the rear ends is grinding from haveing a 30 10.50 15 on one side the a 265 r75 16 on the other side I bought it like that so it's starting to wine and grind I took the left back wheel off to put another 30 10.50 on and when i grabbed the hub it moved back and forth like in and out about a quarter inch and it doesn't do it all the time when I turn left it grinds and pops and grinds and sometimes when it's under stress feels like its skipping teeth
