my truck wont stay running sometimes, what could be the problem?

Sometimes it will start right up, other times I have to
give it gas to start it up. When I'm going I have to keep
foot on gas to keep it running. At first thought it was
just battery, and it was one of te problens but got a
brand new one. When its a bout to die, the oil light
comes on.

No the check engine light is not on. And that's the problem my sister and her husband had it before me and don't think they ever did anything to it.
Tune up is a canned answer from people out of the know, although you may need one. I would first look at the idle air control valve. They are a common problem with age. Not expensive and won't set a check engine light. They are part of the throttle body that lets your vehicle idle since we've moved beyond carbs. Also the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor could be bad. Finally you could have a bad throttle position sensor. The last two usually set a code while the IAC valve will not, so I would look there first.
