Dodge Ram won't stay running!

Asked by Maureen Mar 19, 2017 at 07:01 AM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter loves to go mudding! She went mudding in her 1997 Ram 1500 with her 36" tires and when she was on her way home, all the power in it shut off. No lights, radio, directionals. I know she had a new wiring harness put it recently. She called me when this happened and made it almost all the way home, but it stopped running just short of her parking spot! Now, she tries to start it and it won't stay running. She put in a tps and had the alternator tested at AutoZone but they said it was fine.
She loves this truck. She spends every dime on it and now it's sitting here dead. Any idea where to start looking now? Thanks!

Have her check the cam sensor, with all the mud have her clean the throttle body and check the throttle body sensor...

Well, we have installed a new battery and AIC plus the TPS. It will start when you give it a lot of gas and run until you have to take your foot off the gas pedal. Then, it will not start again without it being jumped. A fuel problem? I don't know. It's still just sitting here and I've become her taxi driver... =(

My the air intake is stopped up,and or dity air filter not get air check tail pipe block.this sounds like a air intake problem not sure

A lot of good answers....and all possibly correct. But, need to do some diagnosis....and this will never change. 1) check for fuel pressure at the injectors. 2) check for spark at the plugs. 3) check intake air supply. 4) check compression. A seasoned mechanic can just listen to a cranking engine and tell you a lot. But you may need to check many sensors and components one by one till you find the problem. It will take a lot of googling and patience but anybody can do it. Just depends on how valuable your time is. Many peeps would rather let the garage handle it.
