I have a 2007 XK so cant commnet on the 2001 XK series. There was a model change in 2006. Visit this owners forum. Has some very good information from enthusiastic owners. http://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-17/
I've owned a couple XKs. Your first priority is if the timing chain tensioners have been replaced. They are plastic & can fail at any time past the 75,000 mile point. They usual fail at higher rpm thus destroying the valve train ...or entire engine! Check to see if after market METAL ones were installed. Those are recommended. Next is the Front end ...if the tires are wearing the inside shoulders before the rest of the tire it indicates excessive toe in ...which in not adjustable on the XKs & is indicative of a front end rebuild. Both procedures are expensive. Most XK owners are aware of this & will keep the paper work to prove this maintenance was performed. On the flip side ...if the timing belt tensioners were NOT done ...it is a very good bargaining point ...as you WILL have to do it or risk engine detonation. Don't let this put you off ...the XK is a beautiful automobile in every parameter of a sports car & will give you 24 mpg if driven under 80 mph highway! I will always have one in my collection.
