94 Miata high screech when starting car

Asked by kwm30 Mar 06, 2010 at 02:50 AM about the 1994 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When starting the car a high pitched screech begins for a minute then will stop.  The car seems to run
fine.  This has been going on for several months and now it is getting louder.  Any ideas on what this
noise is?  I just paid $1500. worth of repairs.  New water pump and a lot of other stuff.

Help!

well its probably one of 3 things either your powers steering pump is going out or your belt either has oil or some other contaminate on it or is wearing out or out of adjustment or your tensioner if you have one could be bad the last two are usually cheep and easy the first not so much

Mark, Thank you soooooooooooo much for responding. I try to do my homework before I go into an area I know nothing about. This is awful to say, but, going into an auto repair shop as a female $ signs start floating around the guys head at the counter. Thank you again for your help.
