i just purchased a 2001 saab 9-5 turbo sedan. I plan to take it to an import repair shop this week to ask to have it checked out to see what if any issues it may have. My fear is having to pay for testing on my car that may not be necessary. What type of test should I request be run on my car to determine what issues it may have and insure that Im not being overcharged?

If it's driving and handling ok and everything works right I would just have them check all fluids(oil, trans, coolant, power steering, ect.) also inspect the belts, brake pads, tires and air filter. Most all of this you can do yourself and it would not cost you a dime. Now if there are some drivability or handling issues direct you attention to these items first.

Absolutely make sure the timing belt was or has been changed at the specified intervals if you have service records. If you don't have the records, get it done asap. This is not a DIY job as so many accessories have to be taken off the actual engine to get the belt off. ie. belt tensioner has to be replaced, etc.
