Subaru outback 2006 check engine light on but obd scanner cannot connect to diagnose

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I inherited a 2006 Subaru outback recently. The
check engine light went on about 2 days ago. I just
tried to have a shop run a diagnostics check but
the scanner could not connect due to a known
issue with this model (per the mechanic). Any tips
on where to go next?

Here's what happened: the mechanic plugged the scanner into the car, "read" it, but then could not download the data from the scanner into their computer. He said this was a known issue for some Subarus. Not sure how much truth there is in that statement though now that I think about it.

We need the trouble codes to help diagnose the problem. Since he cannot transfer the date to his computer all you need to do is write them down.
