Question type: Maintenance & Repair
hello alan,
i don't know from where to start, but to cut it short on you, i have 3 main issues and
unforunatly we have no experts here in egypt, i tried asking some experts over the
internet, they just handed me the service manual...
you might say i am married to a 3rd hand 1997 subaru impreza 1.6 FWD-manual
issue #1: the shifting stick when i set the gear such as in "2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gears"
and tried to accelerate, the stick keeps shaking madly making a terrible noise, and the
more i accelerate, the more noise it make.
issue #2: when i shift on 1st or reverse gear and move my foot of the pedal slowly the
whole engine shakes so bad until i press on the acceleration pedal to overcome this
terrible shake.
issue #3: while the first gear is set, and just accelerating by pressing on the
acceleration but, when i remove my foot, the turn back of the acceleration reaction is
terrible and keep choking until it gets back for 1 RPM or half.
please tell me if you know, what are all the things that could cause these continues
problems in details "mechanical and electrical, specially what sensors causing those
issues", as i own the car for 2 years now, and those defects can't really get solved, as
the source of the problem is unknown.
Well thanks in advance for your time for reading my nightmares, and i hope i could find
a solution on your hands.

okay the EGR valve is the first suspect...yours is crudded up with soot and is not making the action happen at the right time~ supposed to engage to reduce combustion temperature and to reduce exhaust emissions on deceleration____https://www.google.com/#q=1997+Subaru+Impreza+EGR+ valve

use a bit of carburetor cleaner...or petrol and a small brush to remove the deposits and put it back~ check the operation of it and the vacuum source too~

this one has a diaphragm responsible for operation of the device...samples all readings from the 02 sensors and manifold pressure and makes the determination if it should engage the EGR (kinda like forcing you to smell your own farts) slows it down...that's where your acceleration went to....the egr malfunction~ check the bellows of this item because of a mind that Chevron with Techron not only cleans but EATS critical components as well~

it will be not possible to get an air tight seal when you reinstall the thing~____you might be able to make one out of an ole soda case~ https://www.google.com/#q=1997+Subaru+Impreza+EGR+gasket~

concern number 1...the shifter goin' this and that and dropping out of gear is an engine mount or transmission mount gone bad~___https://www.google.com/#q=1997+Subaru+Impreza+motor+mounts &tbm=shop&spd=6618184180736073614

okay engjne and transmission mounts together (would make sense the rubber has deteriorated at the same pace...for 177 is worth it...I think DHL ships out there)~http://www.proimporttuners.com/parts/1997- subaru/impreza-megan-racing-hardened-engine-and-transmission- mounts.html? utm_source=googleproductsearch&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pr oduct&gclid=CID9w6-awLsCFTEV7Aodj0MAcQ

issues 2 & 3 the accelerator position is set by the TPS or throttle position...these seldom go bad, but in a dusty environment is subject to interference~https://www.google.com/#q=1997+Subaru+Impreza+accelerator +position+sensor

another thing is the vacuum lines....they can get brittle and crack....they can easily take on oil and swell...if you can afford to replace them use silicone rubber vacuum lines (like the cops use....like BMW uses) they are ten times the cost of butyl rubber, but worth every penny~ summitracing.com sells them in all colors for the racing indurstry...this example is GATES rubber and available where they distribute...worldwide~

that's all I got...man~~~good luck...no car likes to have to smell it's own exhaust...actually quite necessary if combustion temps are threatening to melt itself...especially cruel with aluminum parts....very necessary for this~...tho impractical when you want to "give it the GO" ~ and has to disengage when it's not called for....which is our problem....it's buggered up with carbon, oil and shit that comes from the exhaust~

this WILL get you out of your jamb....and you WILL give the "best answer" when you finally realize that I know what I'm talking about~

...oh yes MOST important...the system GROUND connection...follow the black battery cable to where it attaches to the frame...take the bolt out....wirebrush the lug by holding it with a pliers so as not to injure the wire connection get 'er nice and shiny....the chassis as well so that a steady 12.5 volts with a steady 20 or more amps as needed will be at hand for the delicate semiconductor devices such as the 02 sensors power for the heated 02 sensor if you've got one and the thinking power of the Central Control unit....the ECU....make your car's brain happy and it will make the right decisions...the new tin/antimony alloy batteries will only last but five years because they reduce their ability to accept a charge ten percent per year...if a NEW one is at hand I recommend that you get one as well as wirebrushing those main connections~
