If transmission sticks in 2nd and 3rd gear does
that mean that there could be a problem with the
solenoid(s)?

it is possible. you will need a manual for this, but possibly you can unplug the torque converter control solenoid. if the problem "fixes" then you likely have a bad tcc. it would be a good idea to scan for codes.
