2002 vw jetta won't start but turns over

Asked by Christinab40 Dec 11, 2016 at 12:44 AM about the 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I need to try and figure out why my 2002 vw jetta
was driving fine with no issues and now it will only
turn over but not start. A mechanic told me over
the phone it was the timing....I know it can't be
diagnosed over the phone. Can someone let me
know what other things I should try before I go
broke or crazy

If you have not done a tune up on the car now would be a good time to do it. Spark plugs should be changed every 60,000km and i find the 4 point bosch plugs (84$Canadian for 6) are the best thing to run in these older cars. So basicly service the filters the plugs check all the vacum lines for signs of leaks or cracks and breaks replace as needed (Cheap to get good lengths of braided vacuum lines from the Dealer.), Check the crank case hoses for signs of clogging (if they have not been replaced before now they are likely in need of replacement) Clean the maf and throttle body temp sensor if it has it. Check and or replace the fuel filter if its not ever been replaced. (be sure to prime the system after disconnecting gas lines, Turn key to power on 3-4 times before start is priming the system). check the rear wheel well on the drivers side(remove inner wheel well and inspect the emissions box mine had a mouse nest on it and the emission line tends to rot off from this box to the front of the car *115$cnd at dealer for this entire emison line*) See if the car starts after doing this. if it still does not start have the fuel pressure checked and listen for the sound of the fuel pump when turning key to power on. should come on steady humm for like 3-6 seconds.
