VW Cabrio starter problem

Asked by Katrina Aug 23, 2016 at 11:09 PM about the 2001 Volkswagen Cabrio

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my car didn't start one day and people told me
to get a starter to replace my old one. Went to the
store and they gave me the wrong one (one for a
Jetta not a cabrio). Although the car starter it drove
poorly and eventually died.

Then after getting the proper starter the car drove
fine for 2 days but then broke down again.
Apparently the new starter has died even though it
is only 2 days old.

The odd thing is that my car would start but mid
drive just randomly turn off/stall.

Pleas help, had this thing towed 4 times and my
mechanics don't know the problem. They have
checked the altinator and battery as say it's fine.

You get new bad parts a lot more than you think, some times have to replace two or three before you get a good one,but if it continues to eat starters, there is and issue with wiring to it,

Just replaced starter in my 2001 Cabrio with A/T. Apperently the databases st the local part stores are wrong. The starter they had listed would not fit. Finally bought a starter for a 2000 Jetta, which fit fine. After doing some research on the vw website, I found the part number to be 020811023FX. This part is listed as the starter for a Jetta/golf but not a Cabrio on most websites. I found that a lot of the aftermarket shops list the wrong parts for the Cabrio, specifically when it comes to anything related to the transmission. To me it sounds like one of two issues - a leak in the Evap system typically causes a stall when performing a right turn, or a bad fuel pump.
