I can't tell you where the computer is, just that my mechanic also told me today that I need to replace the computer on my Jetta 2001 2.0.! The car only has about 67,000 miles. Yet I have been having problems for a while, too. E.g The engine light comes on mysteriously and I won't pass Inspection. For no good reason, car would not start 2x in the past 6 months. My mechanic quoted my 1,800 for a new computer which would also have to be programmed - Or a used one 1,100 if he could locate one. Did you get a price from your mechanic. I am in Brooklyn NY where the hourly rate is $85!!

It is under the cowl on the drivers side in a box. To get to it you have to remove the wiper arms and the cowl.
