Is there a way to see if the timing belt was ever replaced on the 2001 New Beetle that I am purchasing?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

How does a person know for sure what type of maintenance has been done to the car that I am purchasing. I am referring to large/necessary maintenance like the timing belt? ALSO, Is changing the head gasket a recommended phase of the maintenance?
I think it would be a good idea to have some type of code/marking in the engine compartment that would indicate these major things have been performed.What is your opinion on my last remark? Thank you!! I am not sure what trim this car has...it has a 5speed manual trans, but how do I know which model it is??!

You can run a car fax to see what has ben documented, but does not necessarily include all maintenance the previous owner may have done. I would just change the timing belt for peace of mind. The head gasket is not part of routine maintenance. And you marking thing, people can't even remember to knock out the date on a new battery that is installed. So you think marking maintenance done under the hood would be accurate? The model, look on the back of the car.

You might try to get in touch with a local VW dealership and ask the service department to check the VIN number to see what if any repairs were done. This would only cover services performed at dealerships. Otherwise, I agree with Rowefast, but it and have the belt and other associated parts changed.
