my speedometer doesn't work

Check the fuse box to see if the fuse has blown. If that was the case then, most likely, there would be more gauges on the dash that wouldn't work. I know Volkswagen had electrical problems around that time.

Hi bumbadida, I had the same problem with my 1992 Jetta. I took out the instrument cluster and then replaced it putting the speedometer cable into its plug-in on the cluster. This worked! However I'm having a problem finding the three light bulbs.

if its just the speedometer, then its the speed sensor in the transmission. its takes about 5 min to change and is about $12 from the dealer
