1997 VW Golf 'Limp Mode" Automatic Transmission Problem

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1997 VW Golf Automatic Trans will go into 'Limp Mode' where it only will let you drive in 3rd or reverse.  The Trans shop checked out the problem to be the #3 silenoid.  He tests it and said it "Ohm's Out" just fine.  Any suggestions what could cause this to happen.  The Transmission shop thinks the tranny is fine but that it is an electrical problem.....  Hopefully one of you Guru's out there has experienced this problem and solved it without replacing the whole Tranny!

Some transmission shops do not have the correct equipment to diagnose tranny problems. The best shop is AAMCO. No, I dont work for them, but they will be best to tell you what is wrong. They dont charge unless they have to dissect

I already took it to them and they just reset the check Engine Light but the next day it went back on. They charged me $150 and said they had to fix the harness connection. I think they just reset the code and called it a day. I took it back to them and they were supposed to let me know what they found out today but no call.... I was hoping someone had experienced the same problem because it sounds like I might be getting the run-around from AAMCO. Thanks, Tony

I have a 2001 vw beetle tdi ; had a electrical short - fixed it then went to drive car and it had reverse and third , unless I manually shifted I'd get first and second too. After trying all the tricks unplugging battery : holding down gas pedal nothing worked . Figured code was going to have to be reset . I kept trying different things , finally on the interstate at 60 mph I put it on cruise control and after 5-10 miles it reset trans is now working correctly
