1997 Vw Golf, where do you check the Automatic Transmission Fluid

Asked by Tony_Butler Apr 06, 2007 at 02:03 PM about the 1997 Volkswagen Golf

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The transmission won't shift out of 3rd gear except for reverse.  I'm trying to check the transmission fluid and I can't see a dipstick anywhere.  How do you check it?  Also, what else could cause the tranny to not go into 1st, 2nd or 4th??  Could it be the computer?

thank you.  Tony Butler, San Diego, CA

Hello Tony Butler-- On most cars nowadays you don't have a place to check the level of the transmission fluid, short of getting at the transmission from under the car and sticking you finger into the drain hole. Your problem qith your 1997 Volkswagen Golf could indeed be as simple as a computer malfunction. I would have a transmission specialist take a quick look at it and give you an estimate for the cost of repairing what they find wrong. Good luck from Bovan.
