Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a change to purchase a 96 jetta with only 65,000 miles. It does have a transmission leak and needs a new valve cover at the intake. Are these two repairs going to be over 500.00.

well that depends on were the tranny is leaking, If it is just the gasket, that is minor (about 150 to have a garage do it for you or you can buy a gasket and filter kit for about 45 and some fluid) the valve cover is an easy job, I normally charge about 100 to do it, but you can but a gasket for about 25. Hope this helps. What is the price they are asking for the jetta?
yes i would agree but like casper said if pan gasket and valve cover gasket easy job,
I would get estimates from two different shops. Sometimes there are different estimates due to labor charges. Be advised that if it needs this type of repairs @ 65k miles I would be cautious as to other problems as well as scheduled maintenance like water pump, timing belt, etc. Please check as these can run into $1,000 plus . Have the car inspected. And consider an alternative brand. My 2001Audi TT repairs have been substantial. Only 70k. Best of luck.
If it is a 2.0 jetta with a manual trans, that is really a simple repair. What I would do honestly is just go to a junkyard and get another trans. That would be about 50-100 bucks. If it is a 2.0, you can use a trans from any 2.0 VW or you can use one out of a later MK2 16v. They're really not hard to do, I did mine in my driveway laying on my back in about 4 hours.
