What should I expect to pay for a rebuilt transmission?

Asked by tflockwood Apr 18, 2008 at 01:10 PM about the 1995 Volkswagen Cabrio

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm looking at a used Cabrio that might need a new transmission.  How much would one cost me, and how hard would it  be to do it myself?

Likely in the $1500-2000 range. Depends if you have access to a lift, etc. It's much easier to change a transmission out with lift to lift the car. Jacks and jackstands are OK, but it's a lot harder that way.

I just bought a used transmission for my 98 cab, i got it for $895 w/ 1 yr warranty -- check them out...prices varies from $650 up to $1100 (used)...rebuilt might be a couple more. My mechanic is still trying to install that tranny, I heard its easy -- but then again maybe not since he's still trying to install it and it wont go in to couple gears.... Hope this helps! Gdluck!
